Cheap Mods on 04 HO?
Just got a new 04 Dually 4x4 and want to get under the hood to play. Can anyone tell me what the simple tricks are for the HO motors that we can do ourselves for little or no $$. I am still reeling from the downpayment. I know on the PSDs if you pull and plug the wastegate hose it ran cooler (EGTS) and the turbo spun up faster. Also I saw a post where someone mentioned a silencer ring? Does that increase performance or just make more noise? Anything else that I missed? AFE and TAG are on the way and am taking a long trip soon and want to do all that I can before I go. ;D

gdh11,
First, welcome aboard. Second, the best performance mod you can do right now is to put about 10k miles on it. Mine runs considerably better now (~28k) than it did when new.

Agreed! I have almost 6k miles on mine now and it seems to be getting stronger all the time. Fuel mileage is going up each time I fill up also. ;D

My fuel mileage hasn't been great with this truck so far. The computer is telling me I'm averaging about 15 mpg. The old truck in the same situation would be doing about 19-20. I'm sure it's partly because it's new, and a dually, and 4wd etc.

I got 10,500 miles and still get 16 mpg with an unloaded truck! :'(
I did put the Bully Dog box in earlier this week and made a huge difference in power. That whole thing cost me $1,000 including the gauges.

I have less than 2K on mine and will unhook the wastegate and install an AFE and TAG shortly. There is a vendor that just let me know that the 03 exhaust systems will fit an 04 swo that's next. I'll let you all know how it works.

The 03 and 04 Cummins have a bit of a unique program in them for overboost. We haven't set a check engine light yet, however without a fooler, each time you overfuel, the ECM remembers and will keep cutting fuel back until the boost remains in the 24 - 26 range. The effect is so gradual, that you may not even notice the power loss until you hook up a trailer or do something that requires more power.
