Can you replace just the schrader valve on the high pressure side of the a/c?

I have a leak on the schrader valve on the liquid line on my truck. It is loosing 1/2 the charge about once a week. I could replace the liquid line, but I replaced it a year ago when I replaced my evaporator. I bought it from Dodge, and they will not replace it even though it's barely out of waranty. It looks like it can be replaced, but I have not tried yet. I called Dodge, and they said they only sell the line with the schrader valve in it.

Does anyone know if you can replace just the schrader valve?

Find a good A/C shop. They will replace the valve and pressure test the system to verify the leak is fixed.
No it it is not cheap. These miserable newer freon systems are a pain to find leaks without a static high pressure test.

The part number is available......for the neon. Same fitting though. I'll try to remember to post the number tomorrow as it's on my "cheat sheet" at work.

I paid $5 for a handful of mint condition high side valves at the wreckers.....I could not find an aftermarket source for the valves.

I already bought ANOTHER liquid line. I never looked at it close enough until I was checking out the new one. That is when I notcied that it looked like it would unthread. I had always thought that it was soldered on.

I'm going to go pick up the valve and return the $65 liquid line.

Thanks J BODY.

I think mine might be leaking also. I have a slow leak in my system and had a dye added. When you unscrew the cap off of that valve there is this yellowish liquid that very slowly bubbles in there (while the engine is running and the ac is on).

Good to know, I'm assuming Dodge part #? I've got a leak too, I'll check out this valve. What's the special tool if any, needed to remove this valve?

I also assume by removing this valve, I'm going to completely discharge my A/C system? Isn't that illegal or something?

This part did the trick for me. It was about $12 from the dealer. The only thing you need are two wrenches, one to get the scrader out, and another to hold back on the liquid line.

Yes, you will loose your charge. Unless you know it's empty, put your gauges on it and discharge it first before you just go unscrewing the shrader. Saved myself $55 by finding this part number here.

There's also a tool made for removing/replacing Schrader valves without releasing the refrigerant charge... I've got a couple of them on the service trucks. Think they cost about $40, though.
