I have been burned too many times by "do gooder" charities. Administrative costs can exceed 50% of the take. United Way is the biggest bunch of crooks around. Ask them how much of every $ collected actually goes to the kids. Be sitting down when they tell you.
If you want to give money to a charity do your homework. Local charities are much more efficient.

I think 9-11 destroyed alot of trust for most of the big chairities, there's always a local church available to help the mis fortuned. I would rather help close to home, than somwhere on the other side of the world. Granted the other side of the world needs help too, but is'nt that where part of our money sent to the UN is supposed to go?

U. N???? You gotta be kidding. I think that money goes in the big shot's pockets. They sure don't do much else other than some high profile lip service.

Thats MR Hoss to you buddy!
I don't normally give to "charitable organizations" just for the reasons mentioned above. I do, however, make contributions to children's homes that my church supports and to other local charities.
My company has a big push for United Way every year and they always want all of us to donate. I never participate. If I'm going to give I like to KNOW that it is going to a good cause.

I do an annual donation when the Combined Federal Campaign (CFC) drive happens. They give you a huge pamphlet that shows all of the participating charities, both national and international, and they let you know what percentage of your contribution goes towards the charities overhead.
I was surprised how high some of these percentages are .
I feel pretty safe about giving to one of these charities since they have to be somewhat legit if the gov't is looking at them.

Most of the calls from "Law Enforcement" & "Firefighter" charities are paid soliciters.
Most keep a VERY high percentage of the money that's pledged.
One tip-off on some of the bogus ones is they want you to put the check in an envelope on the door, thus avoiding a Federal Mail Fraud charge.
I donate to the local Firefighters when they do the Fill-A-Boot drives at local intersections.

What he said, technically they're legit, but only a certain percentage is required to be used towards the charity.
