Your Advice please

My dad has decided to buy a new to him truck. he found a 03 Chevy 2500HD 4x4 6.0 auto reg cab for $15K. It has under 20K miles on it. You guys have me so paranoid about GM products I dont want him to buy it ,but he insists GM is numero uno. If nothing else is the 6.0 a good engine? and the 4x4 system and autos. He really wont do much other than drive it, little if any towing, 0 4x4 use. Will he regret it? help me convince him. How about fuel economy?? 10 mpg?? he`s always complaning about fuel prices.
Thanks in advance.

Well, when he buys it, you can always say, "I told you so."

thats a heck of a deal! mileage should be in the 10-14 mpg range. only downside, i believe, would be the front suspension, but since he doesnt go offroad, he'll enjoy the softer ride.

They are all good when they are working. They all have their good ones and bad ones. How long does he plan on keeping it? If not forever it probably won't matter.

Remember the only thing people talk about on forums are usually problems. Not how many are good. Without a doubt our numbers are better especially when it comes to longer life (even more so when at high powers).

I usually try to tell someone the highs and lows and let them make up their own mind. If you "convince them" their problems will be your fault.

I've got several friends who have the 6.0 with well over 150K miles. It is a good truck other than the 14 mpg.

Hey Scott, I'd tell him to buy it for the $$$. Thats cheap. I've seen no problems with the engine or trans on these new trucks. If you get me the VIN# I'll run it for you. The trucks more then likely under the factory warranty. He sould see about 15mpg in town and 18-20 on the highway, depending on his (R) foot.
The only problems I've seen are:

-The steering shafts dry out and start to clunk, GM didn't put any Zerk fitting to lube them, but there is a fix/update
-The 4x4 indicator light comes on if the 4wd isn't engage once every couple of months? Only on a some
-And some of the engines develop a little tick noise, worse/usually when cold which is just a little piston slap, normal

Let me know if you got any more ??? or if your dad needs a salesman to talk to, find a truck for him.

Thanks fellas, and Tye, They live out by your work somewhat. If nothing else at least I can trust you to give him the truth. When he has his mind made up thats it. He`s 81 years old and stubborn as all get out.
Well see which way he goes here soon.
Thanks again.

Sounds like a good deal. One of my buddies has the exact same truck he bought new, and now has about 70k on it, and has had no problems. Good running truck. He also hauls with it a decent bit, and it actually does pretty well for a gasser. He has pulled his 1066 IH tractor a few times with it(total tractor/trailer weight around 16k), and while it didnt break any speed records, it did it without a hiccup. I think he would be pleased with it. Here is a video of my buddies :
