You can't make this stuff up

It's a mystery I would like to share and see if anyone has similar experiences.
I added an Undercover tonneau cover to my 04 shortly after new after recommendations on this forum. Two weeks ago, driving on a washboard gravel road way out in the Great Divide Basin in Wyoming, I looked back in my mirror and discovered the cover was nearly off my truck.
I stopped and decided to drive another half mile to a place where I might make repairs and discovered I also had a flat tire. The cover was more than just off, it appears to have been blown off in an explosion. I realized that I had a flat before I stopped and saw evidence of a blowout on the inside rear tire.
A lot of violence took place inside the bed of my truck. The front bracket was bent and twisted and was partially disconnected. A two inch piece of metal from the bed rail where it connects was ripped out and still bolted to the Undercover attachment bracket. On the opposite side, one of the two rear locks were completely ripped out of its hole, and all the rivets were sheared on the Undercover from the front clip. The rubber seal was also torn.
Finally the support structure molded on the underside of the Undercover tonneau to give it the structural strength was clearly outlined on the top. It was like looking at an X-Ray.
My initial opinion was the blowout and the separation of the cover from the bed were separate events. Now I convinced the blowout was the cause because of the evidence of violence. But how could it have happened?
Any suggestions, opinions, or comments? None of it makes sense. And like I said, you can't make any of this stuff up. It's just too bizzare.

Crazy Man! Some things seem so unbelievable but a perfect sequence of events can make them happen. Sounds like you had the "Perfect" sequence of events for destruction...

my guess would be that the bed torqued when the tire blew, which popped some of the clamps that hold the tonneau cover rails on, letting one of the corners of the cover catch the wind. it wouldn't take long for that cover to start pulling other clamps out (and everything else)

How well did the female hinges and tangs located behind the rear window hold up? Did the spiral rings shear off? You mentioned that one of the locks tore away from the hole. How do the metal lock strikes attached to the bed look?

Do you have any photographs?

Maybe an IED on the road? Some kids practicing their bomb making skills?
Either that or an alien attack. Did you black out for any amount of time? Maybe lost an hour? Any grease around your backside? I hear the aliens always do **** probes on their subjects....

They travel billions of miles across space in phenomenal vehicles to land on our planet and check out our butts...

That SUX...I can't imagine how that would happen either. But, i'm glad to hear you were hurt in all the "violence".

Dr. Dizzy,

The spirial rings held, but they were replacements of the original and stronger. One tang, which is attached to the bed with internal rivets, separated because the rivets were sheared. The lock mechanism locks to a metal 90 degree piece of angle iron that is bolted to the rear side rail of the truck.

I have the same cover and replaced the rings as well. Did the (metal lock strikes) metal 90 degree angle iron pieces show any damage? Does one or both show a bend in the upward position? Did you have both lock mechanisms in the locked position or just one?

No damage or bends in the lock strikes. I do not know if both locks were deployed.
I really like the Undercover for my purposes and will replace it with another.
