if Yanmar will provide financing, I'm seriously considering re-powering my gasser boat with their mechanical 4JH4-HTE (110 hp) model

their engineering analysis shows a 17 kt cruise at 3,000 rpm (<5 gph) for my boat with that powerplant. WOT would be 25ish

the alternative is a 4BY150 electronic model that would turn more rpms but push the boat along faster

as the owner of a 1st gen CTD and a 1985 Mercedes 5-cylinder mechanical diesel you know I prefer simplicity

does anybody run or know about Yanmar marine diesels?

both of these engines cost almost as much as the boat is worth now...


pic of said boat, weighs 4,500# with a small-block V8 gasser for power. it's no speed demon, but very seaworthy and very fishable...it should have DIESEL power!

My brother had one in an old converted troller, worked fine, wasnt the fastest thats for sure, his boat was right around 30 foot and displacement hull. easy on fuel though. Poor old girl sunk.

LOL, I've use crapapiller, detroit and cummins. Yanmar has the highest power: < weight: < gph ratio for the price I could afford. I just need a crane to get things finished up. Post any questions and I'll do my best to answer them OR register @ www.boatdiesel.com there is a ton of info there.

yes, true although it would be helpful if you find a hp/rpm chart for the specific engine your wanting to use. Yanmar are high rev motors and yanmar expects you to run them this way. My 6LPs are built to run 3850 all day long. I'm not sure but look to see if Yanmar has 4cyl engines w/4 valve cyclinders, this will up the hp you may be looking for.

just doesn't make sense to me

the diesel option is literally 3x as much as a gasser replacement

the Norwalk Boat Show is next week and I'll corner this guy in the Yanmar booth to see if I can make a deal...this mechanical engine is featured on their website under the "discontinued" department

Yes, diesel does cost more but I'm not so sure about 3x. Question.. how long are you going to keep the boat... the diesel repower will keep you going for many more years and provide improved fuel economy but it may not be worth it if you're going to sell within a year or so. Another thing, google search similar size boats as yours that have done diesel swaps/repower. Knowing the length/weight and compare others results will help your decision vs. just going off "their analysis." Honestly, I'd look at rebuilt Yanmars on ebay and not directly from Yanmar. I can see how you're going to pay out the wazooo directly from them. All good questions but I'd research the heck out of it prior to doing the swap. Once committed to the swap you'll have to think about engine mount, alignment, electrical (even though it's mechanical) and gauges. W/my boat, my dad has done most of the work and beared the $$,$$$ expenses, I just have to put it back together!
