Told O'Reilly's a Wix fuel filter for a 97 Dodge Ram 2500. They gave me a cartridge filter. Looked on my truck, and it has a Mopar filter on there, the kind that looks like an oil filter. Did they give me the wrong one or what? Is that just a housing?

I think they gave you the wrong type. My '98 uses a cartridge type, and my '96 uses a spin on type. I THINK the changeover was in '98.

The change from spin on to cartridge was in '97.
Perhaps Dave has a '97 that was manufactured early in the run.
Easy to tell without looking far, the spin-on has the water drain valve at the bottom, the cartridge has a lever at the top.

Hmm, I'll check it out today. Is one setup better than the other?

My '97 uses the element type of filter. Does your truck have a Prime-loc filter setup? That would use a spin-on. The mount for it attaches to the air intake horn.
