What would you do?

As of right now ive got a 89 with the automatic and a cummins. I am 19 now and have had the truck since i was 16. I repainted the truck, did some pump work, and have done a few other minor things to it. Heres my delima do i sell her and buy me either a newer 12v or a 24v or do i keep this truck and put a 5sp in her and have some fun. Its my first truck which is why i cant decide what i wanna do. Some people tell me i am to attached but hey who isnt attached to something. So what would yall do keep or sell

what's wrong with the auto? auto trucks are tons faster and the 727 you have is pretty tough... maybe just through a torque converter and valve body at it. there are some that disagree but i would think you are better off selling and looking for a 5 speed than you are converting it. just my $.02

i would Keeper unless you want to seller to me cheap
i would love to have that truck for my new mud truck project 8" lift 4:10 gears 44" boggers ohhh yeah
i also have a auto and thought about a stick conversion but its not worth it to me

Like Miciahfied said, if stop light to stop light performance is your idea of fun you will be bitterly disappointed with a 5 speed truck.

I would keep it!! the 1st gens are a lot more to play with. They're cheaper to upgrade hp and most of the upgrades are free! My dad's 1990 drives and rides better than my 2001.

Mines a 89 with auto, its been best truck iv ever owned, I wouldnt swap it for a newer one.

At the young age of 19, I would think the best thing about the truck is the fact It's Paid For!

For what it's worth I think it's a keeper. The other twelve valves are making horsepower but so can these. Getting the horsepower to the ground is the trick. Put a good torque converter in it and a valve body. It will feel like a whole new truck. By the way, that is my next bomb.

I'm in the same exact boat.

My truck has been great and I don't see ever selling it for anything. Anymore 1st gens have a cult following and are rare enough to get looks and respect, and they're capable of plenty power while remaining dependable.

If you're interested in performance, and aren't interested in any more than 600 HP or 12 second runs, then you're dollar-per-dollar better with putting your trade-in money in your current truck.

I love my truck more and more each day, and it's totally stock.

The only reason ive thought about swapping in a 5spd is for when i am pulling loads of cattle or hay. I think it just pull better and for fuel mileage because as of right now in town i am getting 12 to 13mpg and about 16 mpg on the highway. I figure with the 5spd and 3.08 gears which is what the truck has in it i could push around 18 to 20mpg in town and better on highway but the better torque converter and valve body dont sound like a bad idea either. Swapping in the manual wont hurt, and with hauling, you wont regret it. I traded my first CTD for a manual- the auto is just a pooch after about 6K lbs.

Oh yea autos are weak spineless pullers, i can only pull my gooseneck and 17 bales of hay. Did i mention my trailor wighs 6k and the bales are 1000 lbs each, so i guess 15k lbs at 65 all day, an auto cant pull. I'v pulled my 450g dozer on occasion its 18k plus a 9k trailor, it never even acted like it was too much.

So please stop with the auto bashing, i can pull anything a stick can, i also get 22.8 mpg empty, and iv never smoked a clutch either.

The 1st Generations around here won't have a sign in the window over three days before someone grabs them.

If they have the five-speed, less than half a day; mainly because there are probably twenty automatics to each manual out there.

Everyone that I have ever talked to, that has either a 2nd Gen., or newer, and previously had a 1st Gen., wishes they still had the older truck.

Many will say their 1st. Gen. was the best truck they ever owned.

If I had money burning holes in my pocket, I would buy a five-speed ext.-cab 4x4 1st.Gen. Cummins, keep and drive the truck you have, and completely restore the second truck, sparing no expense, going all out.

Once I had that truck road-ready, I would start on the other and do the same.

I had much rather have two killer trucks that were older, than to be in debt for a newer toy that I couldn't depend on, and would put me to begging rides everytime it needed work.

Get a good torque converter and a shift kit for your truck and keep it. The stock converter sucks when pulling a heavy load, but with the right converter your truck will pull very well.
