Is it worth it?
I'm new to the site. So far I love it.
I'm looking at purchasing an '01 4x4 QC SWB stock w/69,000 miles. Took it to local dealer to have it checked out. I knew the steering box was wasted. Dealer found a list of other things (track bar, front diff seal leaking, belt tensioner (?) siezed). Looking at $3000+ to fix. My question is, should I fix or keep looking? Dealer is asking $25k.

I'm thinking that you could probably do better than that for the price. Especially if you have to throw in 3K on top of the 25K. Maybe if the dealer is willing to fix all that stuff and still come in at 25K I might go for it, but even then? My biggest fear is that for no more miles than the truck has, that it already needs all those things. I would at least look around some more any way, give you something to compare to.

I think you could do MUCH better. That is not many miles with a whole lot of problems and a whole lot of price. It seems like there would be a very good chance of future problems too. Could this be a wrecked vehicle? Find a new dealer.

Prices here close to St. Louis are high. Not sure why. My thoughts were to have the dealer (independent dealer) selling the truck fix the problems. The only thing is that he has been sitting on it for 3-4 weeks telling me that it needed ball joints and he has been too busy to get it fix. My worries are that it's been rode hard & put away wet.

Update: Just got back from the dealer doing the checking for me...$1200 for the steering & belt tensioner.
Could the steering be from heavy off-roading?

I drove 400 miles to get my truck. A long drive will only bother you for awhile, getting a lemon will bother you until you get rid of it. I think I would avoid that one, especially at that price.

Sounds like that truck has been off-road quite a bit. To check, look in hard to clean places. If there is alot of unseen mud underneath Id look elsewere because of the problems it has now. No telling what will happen down the road. Now, if the dealer comes down on the price, then id think twice about buying it. IMHO
PS: What kind of dealer has a truck for sale that also fronts you a bill for things needing repair???

Might as well throw my nickels worth in this.....I can't imagine paying 25K for a 01 woth 70 thousand rounds on it. NADA Book value alone would put the top dollar at around $23,500. But that would be considered HIGH retail, with nothing wrong!
My 01.5 has 86 thousand miles and is pretty immaculate, I guess if I could sell it for $25,000 I would too......but that wouldn't make it a good deal for you!
Save your money, look elsewhere. Even if the dealer fixed all that is wrong, its not worth $25 K.

Take some time and look around! If your not in a big hurry you can do a lot better.
I purchased my 01 Quad , HO, 4x4, LWB in 2002. It only had 33,000 miles and transferable 5year, 75,000 mile warranty. Truck included Chrome rocker panels, Nerf Bars, Sprayed in bed liner, Tinted windows, Wheel well trim, and tool box.
Purchased this truck for 27,500. I live in Maine and had to fly to Missouri to pick it up. The plane ticket only cost me $200.00 since I knew about 3 weeks in advance that I was buying the truck.
Of course I did buy from a private individual. Found truck on E-bay and bought it about a month later after talking with the seller. If you do your home work and check title and service background and have warranty, there isn't much that can be wrong with it.

As far as the front end goes, sounds normal for some 4x4's, mine needed ball joints, track bar at 40k. Steering box was junk from factory. Some of these 4x4's are tight and others are not, do a search on steering wander and read for days.
Price is still way too high, even if it was perfect. Don't forget to check the pump wire and under the pump cover for piercings, otherwise another dealer may not honor 100k warrantee.

The track bar and steering bock on my dads 1/2ton were toasted at 15,000 miles. When i do buy my used 2 gen 3/4 diesel dodge ,i plan on buying a new steering box and track bar(dt) along with some other stuff, but the great thing about used dodges is they are usually the cheapest/best deals around. I would look for another one with less miles, especially if u are looking for a 24v and i hope you know about their injection pump/lift pump problems. The more miles non gauged, the more potential for problems along down the line. Also I would look for a manual tranny model. Just my 2 cents. btw, this is my first post, awesome site you guys have here!
