Red face Wood Burner Season Already !!

Well had to fire up the wood burner today didnt have much of a summer here in OHIO anybody else burning wood already?

Who burns wood here at DTR ?

I like it you have all the gas burning prople telling you how much your wasting time cutting wood and keeping your saws......then winter rolls around and those same people are complaining "gas prices are outragious!!!" I just laugh at them and tell them that when I got my wood buner going strong it saves me about $100 a mth.

I hope the gas prices go sky high this year and maybe they'll let up on diesel its now more than premeium in OHIO $2.10 a gal what a joke .there charging more for floor sweepings (diesel) than they are for their most refined fuel

Keep your warm fires burning

My parents burn wood and coal as their only source of heat and when I build my house I'm sure going to burn it too. I hate this forced air gas heat in my apartment. Your either really cold or cool never warm. Oh and by the way my parents burn about 8-10 cords of a mix of oak, aspen, and pine and about 1-2 tons of coal in this heater Wood and Coal Stove

the money saver

I have an englander and I love it I only burn wood and Im not picky ,durring spring I just go around my land and cut up downed trees and hope for the best if it ever comes time to cut. I'll cut maple Ive burnt many types of wood and everyone raves about locus Id say its in second place . maple will still be burning in the morning locus burns hot, really hot but it only burns for a short amount of time . no mess with maple ,locus bark goes all over the place. Ive never burnt pine I figgered it would creasode my chimly up too bad with the sap and all. and 8-10 cords would last me 2 winters.

I used to work in heating and cooling and my boss told me that the problem with electric heat is ...................electric will heat fine but its not warm heat the reason is ..your body heat is about 98* the heated air that comes from the register is warmer than the air thats in the room but to you it feels cold.

I just stoke up my stove and its hot heat and Ive broke 95* in my basement when it was 15* outside my wife had windows open upstairs

Life is great !

I agree with you on what you said above. Coming from wood and coal heat to forced air gas has been a real experience for me. I don't think I've ever had as many blankets on my bed as I do now (Dam I need a girlfriend). Everyone that goes over my parents house loves the heat and is always amazed since we run around in our summer shorts. I know there has been many of times when it was snowing outside and we've had the windows open because its too hot Nothing like snow blowing in on oneside of you and being cooked on the other

We just talked about getting a wood stove.

I had one in Calgary.
When I would get home after a training session I would load the stove with birch, leave the door open, take a shower and when I came out I had a nice fire going. Just close the door and choke it a bit and two more logs will heat the whole house all night.
Most of the nights would be in the minus 20 range.
A few well placed ceiling fans and I had heat through the whole house.

I looked in to the pellet stoves but Im surrounded with trees so it wouldnt make much sence to go out and buy little wood pellets.
A couple of my friends have them they love em' most of the time they burn corn instead of wood pellets.

I also looked at the outdoor wood burners you can heat your water and everything with them babys and you can almost throw a whole tree in at once witch is cool ,but I dont like the fact that you'll have to frezze to death going outside to fill it

I have bilco doors and durring the winter I remove the steps and fill the whole thing up then all I do is get up off the couch walk over and open the basement door and bam a 7' stack of wood about 5' wide and 20' long itll keep me warm for a while then I have to fill it up at about mid winter I spray bug barrier aroung my door about twice a week and I dont have no problem at all.that part of the basment anit finished anyway.

I'm having a pellet stove delivered today. We bought a Thelin Gnome, which is a small stove with a max 31K BTU output. the adjustability of the feed is what attracted us to a pellet stove as we're putting it in a sunroom and didn't want to get roasted out. Pellets in my area are about $200/ton. I don't think I'll ever see a return for the investment as the stove and installation of the flue is somewhere in the neighborhood of $4000. But it will allow us to use the sunroom now thru winter.

Shouldn't hurt the re-sale and/or jealousy value any.

Looks kinda like my antique stove at the cabin. She's gonna get an overhaul in a couple years though. I also have an old Franklin stove for the porch when it's done. I want to put a gas insert in that one. The amount of heat that put out burning wood, wasn't worth wasting a match. I also have a small "Alaska" brand box stove (very old). Iv'e used it and it works good, but is currently an end table.

I hate cutting wood, its one of my worst memories as a young one, but I hate spending money evan more, so I cut wood. I like saving money and also like the heat. All we have is a space heater in our basement with a homemade plenum on top and duct hooked up to the main furnace. Their is a real simple thermostatic blower mouted in the line that keeps our house real warm. not- -warm

I've had a pellet stove for the last 7-8 years. If it blew up tomorrow, I'd definitely buy another. pellets are about $140/ton by me, and it takes me 2.5-3 tons to heat all winter.

I would like to get a stove of some sort, right now we are using the heater fireplace (steel firebox that draws fresh air from outside and blows it inside) It's not very efficient and it has to be closely monitored. I like burning burch. Pine sparks too much, maple (around here) doesn't produce the heat, alder while plentiful, burns and rots too fast.

We did some major renovations 3 years ago, and when we did the family room over, we put in a Harman P61 pellet stove. Very happy with it. I've got 4 tons all set to go. ($186 for 2 of them last month, a little less for the first two in August. Another reason I need a bigger ram.....I'll only take 1600 lbs. at a time in my 1500)

When my gas furnace dies, I'm going to look into replacing it with a pellet furnace to run the radiant floors we have in the kitchen & living room.

We're adding a garage and master bedroom over it next year, and a smaller pellet stove will go in the bedroom. I'd love to have one in the garage, too, but I don't think the Mrs. would go for it.

My bro-in-law bought a house that had a wood stove. After 2 winters of chopping wood, and seeing my stove, he got one.

I've been a woodburner for years but now use a pellet stove as my primary heat. If you've never had one, try it. I'll use the gas furnace for sporatic heating when it is cool but once the temperature drops to 40 deg. F, the pellet stove is used. I also have a wood stove but it can't be regulated very well and gets the room so hot you can barely stand it. The wood stove is also my emergency heat just in case the electricity goes off. Also, I have so much free wood to burn, I'll use it just to get rid of the wood.
