Won't stay in gear!!
I need to get my park brake fixed, it won't even hold on flat ground, does anybody know how to adjust or tighten the parking brake?? My other question is today I tried to park on a hill a pretty good hill, no load, just empty, since the park brake is out of order I just put it in first gear, thinking that would hold, well it didn't she kept trying to creep back down the hill in gear, turning the motor over as she went. Then of course didn't want to start very well because she was full of fuel in the cyclinders, took a couple of times. Is there something wrong, (compression). I would think it would stay put in first gear, I could maybe see fifth. I hope I am worrying about nothing but it is kind of bothersome. Thanks

as far as on a hill they will all creep dwn, just depeend on weight and rear end gears hill angle or grade and ect. if its running ok jus fix the brake and call it good

Re:Won't stay in gear!!
Well the engine wasn't full with diesel anyway- on the 01 as with any other VP44 engine you need a signal to the inj. solenoid to inject fuel. Without juice to the pump (key to off position ) you can turn the engine as long as you want... no fuel in cylinder. If you turn the engine backwards (truely bad idea!!) the internal vane pump will try to pump fuel out of the VP44, the engine oil pump will pump oil out of the bearings etc.
Every stopped piston engine will be turned by a force on the crankshaft- since every engine has a bit of blowby the cylinder(s) on the compression stroke will lose pressure and therefore the piston can creep upwards a little more. So putting the vehicle in gear will not hold it in place but even so it's a very good idea to put it in as low a gear as available since it will not roll fast in first gear when the parking brake fails. On a 10% slope my old Landcruiser diesel would creep about 5 feet per hour in 1st gear without parking brake and would roll about 25 mph in neutral. Damage after an impact would be slightly lower at the first speed ;D
PS I second the notion on repairing the parking brake
