Wont go anywhere!!

Hey Ive got a 89 cummins with just the regular old 3 speed automatic(junk). The other night i shut thew truck off to talk to a buddy of mine and when i started it back up i had nothing. Wouldnt go in reverse drive or any other gear so i crawled under the truck to check the leakage and the leakage in the transmiision and outside both feel fine. The transfer case is good so where do i start next. This came without any warning at all and not at a good time. please help!!!

I'll assume you mean linkage and not leakage. Did you pull the dipstick to see if it's low on tranny fluid? They'll run until the fluid gets below the pickup and then ... nothing.

sorry about the misspelling i was in a bit of a hurry. I did check the tranny fluid and it was fine, wasnt low and didnt smell burnt. I am thinking its bout time for a nv4500 swap, these automatics just dont seem to hold up for me.

Maybe a stupid question, but did you check the fluid whith the truck running and hot? Aside from that, try low range just for giggles.

This may sound silly, but have someone watch the rear drive-shaft, while you put it in gear and try to move.

I had a pinion-shaft to break in two, once a long time ago.

The truck acted like it was in neutral.

There was no grinding or anything.

Another time, I had all the ring-gear bolts to shear off; the truck acted the same way = driveshaft spin, but no go.

I know both of these episodes are one-in-a-million, but worth looking into.

FYI, the "regular old 3 speed automatic(junk)" aka the "torqueflight," is one of the most venerable, reliable and toughest trannies to ever to come off the American automotive engineering drawing boards. It served well behind the 426 street hemi (making around 500hp stock) and many are still in service at dragstrips around the country today. The vast majority of problems anyone ever had with them can almost always be attributed to operator neglect or abuse.

I agree with 2stroke. Did you shift the t-case throught the gears to see if it was in neutral.

Exactly what I was thinking. My son did the same thing once.

if it's not the t-case i actually had a truck where the linkage lifted about 1/8th to 1/4 inch and it lifted off the piece that it rides on in the tranny (sorry i don't know the technical terms) Anyways i would check to see if there is any play. reach up and push down on the top of the linkage assembly... it may work.

I didnt mean to make anyone mad on dissing the transmission, its just for my lifestyle i tend to have nothing but trouble with a automatic. It just doesnt like heavy loads. I did check to make sure the transfer case hadnt kicked out into neatrul but i wasnt that lucky.

I dont like autos either, thats why I swapped. but take my advice---dont do the swap!!! Its a bit of a pain, and very very expensive.
