Wix or Penske Filters
Wix makes pretty good oil filters, from everything I have read about them. And they used to make the Penske oil filters.
I am wondering if anyone has used them on their Cummins diesel.
I can get some of the Wix made Penske oil filters to fit the Cummins diesels pretty cheap, in fact less than 1/2 cost for the standard Fleetguard filters. I change my oil every 4000 miles (I use the Quaker State Universal HDX diesel oil because I want to take advantage of their 250,000 mile warranty), so I won't be challenging the life of the filters I believe.
Any specific reason anyone knows why NOT to use these filters?

Thats MR Hoss to you buddy!
Re:Wix or Penske Filters
Don't know of a reason NOT to....except that Cummins recommends using Fleetguard Stratopore....which are only about $9. I've been told recently that you get what you pay for...and this is one instance where I believe that. I don't think $9 is too much to spend every 4000 miles, but that's just me.

Re:Wix or Penske Filters
I've read but can't verify that Penske filters are made by Fram now...and...well...... : There are guys here on the forum that use Wix as well as other "diesel filters" like Baldwin, Donaldson, and Hastings. I don't know the details of your truck, but I'd recommend using a filter from the list of DC approved filters. Like Hoss I use the Fleetguard Stratapore filter on my 02.

You are right, Fram makes the new Penske filters, or so I am told. These are older, Wix-made filters.
I have also used the Stratopore filters to this point.
Where is there a list of approved filters? I have not seen that.

Re:Wix or Penske Filters
I have used Wix filters on my truck since it was new. I used Wix filters for years on all of my pulling units when I was in the oilfields and also when I was driving a 18 wheeler over the road. I changed the filters every 100 hours on the equipment I was in charge of. I have put well over 1 million miles on different trucks and equipment and I have never had a problem with wix filters yet. Wix is made by Dana which is a very reputable company.

Here's a site that contains a reprint of a DC TSB regarding the filter list:

I hear the Wix filters are good. Personally, I use Baldwins. There's plenty of good filters out there besides the DC "approved list." :

Re:Wix or Penske Filters
I emailed Wix about all this, and I got this info back from them:
"We originally made this (Penske) brand but have not supplied them for about 3 years now. The Penske part number you mentioned is a direct cross reference to our 51607 part number which is what we have assigned to your application. Assuming their current supplier is using the m same part numbering system, you should be fine."
Does the 51607 have a fluted bottom so it can be used on the 2003 Cummins diesel Dodge? What kind of performance would I get out of the Wix filter as far as particulate size, etc?
"The media in our 51607 part number is rated at 17 micron. Please note, a particle that is 1 micron in diameter is .000039" across. We are working on a fluted version for release in the future but our customers are successfully using our current version on these engines today."
I am comparing the Wix filter to the Fleetguard filters. Can you give me pressure drop data on this filter at 14 gpm?
"At 14 gpm, our initial restriction is 2.3 psi."
Are Wix filters not approved for the Cummins Diesel?
"The filters on this (approved) list are all made by Fleetguard who is owned by Cummins. They are not going to "approve" any other brand because they can't provide warranty consideration. Our 51607 outperforms their product
even to exceeding their static burst pressure requirement. Our product is covered by our product warranty and can be used with full confidence on your application."
Additionally I found this Product Quality Information Bulletin for this filter from July 2001:
http://www.wixconnect.com/assets/516...LLETIN.pdf.pdf
I am comfortable in using the Wix and Wix/Penske filters now. I would NOT use the Fram/Penske filters.

Re:Wix or Penske Filters
If your truck is still under engine warranty - I would strongly suggesting using an "approved" filter. If anything did go wrong with an unapproved filter - that would be the first thing they would blame it on.

Re:Wix or Penske Filters
I agree with DR. Evil, anyone who has a truck under warranty should definitly use a approved filter. If not, when you need warranty service a unapproved filter is ammunition in the dealers arsenal.
Also the Wix rep replyed to MAragorn that Cummins makes all the approved filters on the list. I was not aware that Fleetguard/Cummins made AC Delco, Motorcraft, and Purolator filters.
Stick with the Fleetguards and you will have no worrys.

Re:Wix or Penske Filters
I don't doubt that there are other good filters out there - Mobile 1, Wix, Baldwin (my truck had a Baldwin on it when I picked it up), & Hastings all come to mind - Im sure they are all pretty good filters but the fact remains that they are not "approved" and IMO, saving a $2 on a filter is really not worth the headache should you have any engine problems while under warranty.

Big Ed,
I guess that since Fleetguard makes Motorcraft and AC, then Cummins must own Ford and GM. ;D

Re:Wix or Penske Filters
$50,000 truck= 500,000 miles divided by 5000 miles per oil change= 100 oil changes at $9 per filter vs $6 per filter = $3 savings x 100 oil changes = $300.00 savings divided by 120 months (10years) = $2.50 per month saving. Cost of engine total replacement $18,000 in crate = $150.00 per month. In other words you would take the chance of sacrificing your engine and warranty for the cost of three chocolate bars per month. These would be Canadian dollar values so in US dollars you save even less per month. Why?????????? PK
