Wiring in Off Road Lights

I built a light bar for my truck and I want to wire in the lights to come on with the high beams. I want to use the dimmer switch to trigger the relay for my off road lights. What wire should I use as a trigger?

I have no idea about what wire to use, but that light bar looks great! Looks as good as store bought, nice work!

I tapped mine straight off the light pig tail. That keeps the wire run short and easy to get to.

I used a volt meter to tell me which light had power only with the high beams on.

You may want to check your local laws. Here it is illegal to run offroad lights on the street. You could run it though a main on/off switch and still trigger them the high beams just in case.

I pulled control power off the high beam circuit right at the bulb. It runs through a switch that supplies the control side of the relay for the lights. That way they will only come on if high beams are on, but I can turn them off if I don't want them with the high beams.

Tap power from high beams to power a relay. Switch this power as well. Then you can have high beams with or without your offroad lights. I have been running a set of lightforces this way for years.

Thanks. I going to tap my relay into the high beam switch.

I know it's illegal to run them on the road in California. I end up on dirt roads a lot.

Tap off one of the high beam wires like other have said. But run the ground (-) wire for the relay to a switch mounted in the cab. This way you only have to run one wire inside the cab and you don't have to worry about fusing it like you would a hot (+) wire. Then just a short jumper wire off the switch to a ground location close to your switch.

If you really wanted to get yourself in trouble, run a 3-way switch and put a blinker relay on the other side... So then you have "on-off-flashing" options... great for road side safety reasons...
