******

Well Grandpa, 78 years old, finally passed on his Jeep to me. Just hauled it down from the Reno area to Vegas. It is a 1947 ****** CJ-2A, still 99% stock. I have a lot of learning to do regarding this vehicle and its maintenance, which grandpa wasn't too picky about. It is in great condition though as it spent most of its time sitting in the garage.

I'll get some pictures of it this weekend. Anyone have some good resources on the Internet for these vehicles?

Lucky dog, Im sure gramps took good care of it. Love to see some pics. I had a 65 cj as my first jeep, 4.29s, D44 rear, 4 speed. scary on the road at speed, but went like a banshee in the hills. Sure miss it.
Ive dealt with a outfit in texas for parts, Ill try to remember the name. Always got top quality stuff, there everything you need avaliable for it. JUST KEEP IT STOCK, IMHO, much nicer on the oldies.

The 2A, 3A and the M38 are my favorite ****** Jeep style by far....

The CJ-2A was the first civilian Jeep. the 2A ran from 1945 through 1949. In 1947 ****** made 65,078 CJ-2A's you now own one of them.... congrats
Serial numbers for 1947 would be 83380 thru 148458, so yours should fall in there somewhere....Serial numbers are located on the out side of the left front frame horn, behind the bumper. The following will apply if yours is for sure a 47, check the ID numbers, with these old jeeps you can't always trust the title....if your number falls before or after that let me know and I can spec it to the year it "actually" is

All the CJ-2A used the "Go Devil" L head 134 I4 engine. They are a good motor, hence the nick name "go devil" they put them little things thru a living hell and they always kept running, they were very easy to "field service" too...

your figures out of that little thing are quite good for the time it was made....horsepower...60@4000rpm....torque...105@20 00...it out performed the engines used in the Ford and Bantam prototypes presented to the DoD before ****** won the contract for the military versions used in WW2 and later wars...

you should have the T-90 3 speed, with the stick on the floor, 46 was the last year that some came with the column "three on the tree." the trans is pretty stout for the jeep and has no problem holding the "go devil's" power...

The T-case is a Dana model 18, it is a gear driven case this can be a big plus...if your lucky you may have the overdrive this was a factory option in 47, you will know if you do cause there will be three sticks coming out of the floor....1 for the trans gear, one for the t-case gear and the possible other one would be the PTO and/or overdrive....the original overdrives for these things are going for huge ammonts of money as they are becoming harder and harder to find in good working order, heck even the ones that need rebuit are going for big bucks. the cool thing about the overdrives on the dana 18 is that you can still have a PTO output in use with the overdrive there, many companies made tons of PTO items for the 2A, such as winches, water pumps, farm equipment, etc...

the front axle is a Dana 25 with drum brakes...

your luck it isn't a 46 or you would possibly have the Spicer 23 rear axle, it wasn't know to be real strong and they are very hard to find parts for that are worth anything...yours being a 47 you have the Dana 41 rear axle it is quite stronger than the 23....

Your axle ratio's can be any of the following, these are the only ratios available in 47 for that front axle assembly and the rear would have to match the front so it has to be one of these....
4.27:1, 4.88:1, 5.38:1, and 6.17:1

I know I know, you really didn't need to know all that but i was on a roll....

If you have any other questions or concerns post them up or PM me, I know a little about older jeeps......

here is a good site for little things, check out the link for Specifications

WillysRule, that was AWESOME! Thanks. Now I have to go start doing some homework to see what all I really have. I'm jazzed about this weekend! My buddies are planning a trip to a very remote ghost town here in the desert, and I am hoping to take her out there.
