Thumbs up Why Mods?

OK I'm new to diesels so I have a question. Wife & I were towing our fiver over monarch pass out of Salida CO. last summer.
Shifted from 6th to 5th about 1/4 way up & maintained speed limit(55 to 60mph) over the top.The big block gasser would creep over in 2nd. Fuel millage, 12 to 13 towing fiver & 20 mt. Gasser 8mpg.
Now I said that to ask this, Why would anyone need mods on a rig such as this? Ive always driven gassers & this is so much better.Do veteran diesel owners just get jaded or what?

Fortylove, I guess it all comes down to this reason: "Because we can!"

The Cummins is a very strong engine off the dealer lot, but it has been purposefully detuned so as to not break the remainder of the drivetrain. All we are trying to do is let the engine run. I haven't started yet but I can't wait!

Mods are done because they are easy and cheap (relatively speaking). In many cases with the diesel engine, large horsepower, Torque and Mileage gains can be achieved for less than $1000 by utilizing a "plug and play" device. This is nearly impossible with a newer gasoline engine to see these results with such a low cost.
You are correct however, why ruin the warranty on a vehicle that already has gobs of power? Why? Reduce the life expectancy of this engine from 350,000 or more miles to what, a measly 100,000 miles??? Simple answer: it is the never ending need for more power. I've powered up an already powerful sports car, given a fast boat a stronger jump, made an off-roader fastest to the "empty" line. I think it is along the lines with having more money, it is something to strive for. Power on the other hand has something to do with testosterone. If you don't feel it, don't ask. It is nearly impossible to explain.

Modding the truck is all good and well, but it depends on priorities. I leave my truck stock and spend my money on my snowmachine (snowmobile to you lower 48 people). My current ride is producing about 165hp and only weighs 490 lbs. It is a LOT faster than my truck and if it breaks I'm not without wheels. If I break it, pistons are only $100 and take 45mins to swap. Besides, how many of you JUMP your truck?

Mine too Barry!

These trucks are great stock but some us us speed freaks just can't leave well enough alone. What better place then this to throw thousands of dollars.....

Plus, we are just driving six cylinder trucks and we need to be able to keep up with the V-8s.......

Some good answers but I think I'm too conservative to blow off a 100K mile warrantee for a couple more hp.

I know what you mean. Back in my younger days I couldn't fathom throwing away a vehicle warranty either, not even on an $8K Corolla. I think I'm just financially secure enough now that I don't mind trashing a $40K truck in the name of lots-o-fun. Don't tell the wife I said that.

Put any fueling box on it along with a better muffler, or no muffler, and a better air intake and you will be making more power than a stock 600. Now, if the 600 has any mods done you may need one of the higher hp boxes like the TST to beat him...
