who's the xfer case expert?

So I got my parts truck to do my 5 speed swap but the donor truck's xfer case was torn in half and a DLD xfer case (light duty?) plus a short bed. I have a automatic with DHD xfer case (heavy duty?). I know I have to install the 29 spline shaft into my case. Question is, are the 29 spline shafts the same for both DLD and DHD cases?

Also, I hear talk of replacing a snap ring in the xfer case after tearing into the case. Is it the 3-4 inch diameter ring up front that needs replacement or some other ring?

I also need the torque specs for the fly wheel bolts. Do I need to buy new ones or can I use the ones I pull from the donor truck?

I can get you the torque spec's. You only have to change the input planetary gear not the shaft. I'm not sure if the DLD and the DHD are the same. I didn't know that they made a short bed extended cab in 97. They say you should use new bolts but you could use the ones from the donor truck Just locktite them. Torque spec is 101lbs

The snap ring is on the rear splined shaft that the rear drive shaft yoke goes into. Remove the rear drive shaft, then remove the 4 bolts holding the transfer case tail housing. Remove the tail housing cover and you'll see the snap ring. You can order a Gilley's transfer case saver from Drivetrain.com. It's a tempered steel split ring that bolts around the shaft taking the place of the snap ring. I've heard you can get the same ring from an industrial supply place. You might as well change the rear seal while you have the tail housing cover off. Here's the web-site www.drivetrain.com .

Well I am no expert but one thing I know is that you want to take care of the snap ring problem. I was entering the highway and there was a Ford PS I wanted to zoom by. Well the last time I looked I was boosting through 16 lbs when the snap ring let go. Needless to say there was nothing left to fix just replace. Oh ya the Ford got to go ahead of me.

I am the expert. No, the 241 dld and 241 dhd are not the same. the input from a 241 will not work in a 241 hd. I have to order it tomorrow. there are parts that are the same in each case but it';s fairly obvious which ones are different

I guesss I'll order it from Dodge, dont know where else to get it. besides, I need to have this truck back together. Any ideas for supplier?

Rockland Standard Gear, $212 for the shaft. Excellent to deal with and they know everything if you have the case number from your data tag

I find quad4x4.com to be very reasonable for manual trans, transfer cases and some axel/U joint parts. I dont know there prices on this stuff though so I have no idea how it would compair.

I looked at quad 4x4s web site and they didnt offer the shaft or bearing. i'm not saying they didnt have it but you might think.


any way, rockland says I should have it by wednesday so I'llhave it together Thursday
