White Smoke

I told myself I wouldn't do this, but...

Contrary to statements in another post - Water (H2O) is most certainly a product of diesel combustion! So is carbon dioxide (CO2). Simply stated, diesel fuel is a hydrocarbon just as is gasoline, kerosene, coal, or wood. In a perfect world the end result of burning any hydrocarbon should result in the release of energy, CO2, and H2O. Obviously our world isn't perfect and there are other emissions.

Diesels -

Oily white smoke that hangs in a cloud... Lean condition, timing problem, cold. We should see very little of this on the 3rd generation vehicles but a plugged fuel filter will cause the condition.

Sooty black cloud... Overfuel condition. Hit the throttle and see smoke until the turbo spools up properly.

White vapor... Steam or water vapor condensing into the atmosphere. Think vapor trail because that's exactly what it is.

ok, and whats the point?

You did remind me of my Steam Propulsion EOOW (Engineering Officer of the Watch) board 20 years ago with your thoughts on white smoke.

Hopefully shortround won't read this and chime in with one of his sewer pipe stories ......

If the TSB for white smoke doesn't apply to your rig, then you might check to see if your wastegate rod is seized. I have the same problem and had it in to the shop. STAR told the tech to check the WG rod and sure enough it was frozen in place. Rather than replace it, STAR told him to break it free with PB Blaster and see what happens. Soposedly soot is building up in there causing it to stick. Mine kept throwing overboost codes and on some days feel as though there was no power....some days it felt as though it would rip a house off the foundation??? My rig is in the shop as I type this for a few problems, the WG being one of them. Maybe this time they will get the injectors O rings to seal and replace the squirters that have been bad for some time now???
