White smoke at startup and whistle drone sound under acceleration.

Thanks for all the help before but I'm back again. Recently with my 02 I've been getting a sound from the engine that sounds like a boost leak (I don't really know what a boost leak sounds like but...) if you keep the go peddle at medium it sounds like your blowing into a bottle and get a whistle, it's not turbo whine. A few weeks back I was having the same problem, tightened the intercooler brackets (I think that's what there called) and the problem went away for about 1000 miles. So the problem is getting worse day by day. After a warm shutdown and start about 5 minutes later I had a huge puff of white smoke. Mileage is better after tightening the boots but still not what is was when I bought the truck 5 months ago, 15 something now compared to 17-19. Fuel pressure is the same, needing a new LP soon; I can get it down to 4 psi pretty easily.

Second question, the LP/truck is under warrantee but the dealer goes buy flow rate not fuel pressure. Before I blow $100 to have it tested has anyone had fuel pressure at or below 4 PSI at WOT and have the dealer replace the LP under warrantee? I know everyone is saying just replace the LP or you’ll toast the IP but money is really tight, I mean really tight. At this point I don’t care if it’s a new LP or in tank unit I just want the truck running the way it was.

Thanks
Bill.

Can't help you much with the boost noise, mine hasn't made any noise. Had my LP replaced by dealer, under warrenty. My was at 15psi idle but when going home from Home Depot pressure dropped to 3psi at 50 mph. I got it home and put a hand held pressure guage on where my fuel pressure guage assembly was installed, it would go to 4psi and then dropped below ZERO at idle . I put everything back together started the truck to put in garage and it through codes 1693 and I believe 0237 anyway the second code is fault in LP. I took it dealer after removing my Mods and they repalced the LP. They told me there was no in tank replacement for my truck!! I guess they wanted to get rid of old shop stock. Ok with me, once warrenty is over, after market pump, fuel lines go on. As for white smoke my friend has an 02, his milage dropped and it would start surging when driving on freeway, also white smoke when starting. It wasn't long and the truck threw a 0216, vp44 death. the truck still ran, but they had to change his vp44 and lp. Bye the way My fuel millage has dropped since the LP change The dealer does do volume testing now. Yours will probably pass if you are still at 15 at idle. I do think you have at the very least LP issues. Sorry I couldn't be of more help. Some one who's had this problem, Please chim in!!!!

This might sound dumb, but I had a drone whistle noise and it ended up being my rearend. Gears are throttle sensitive. Just a thought.

when my vp44 was going south, i would run my truck for a while and shut it off, then i would come back to it 5 or 10 min later and try to start and it would start hard, when it did start, i got a very big puff of white smoke. When this happend, i was like what the heck is all of this smoke, i did not show any codes at that point in time and was a bit concerned, but about three days later, i got the dead pedal and "the code" Sorry i cant help with your other problem

No hard starts, no codes. I was looking at the intercoller boots and just squeezing them and now the drone is gone but the white smoke is still present but not as bad. I just filled up and mileage is still good, power is ok, fuel pressure is 11-12 idle 7-9 crusing and down to 3.5 wot. I think it's time to take it to the $tealership.

I see your up north, My truck has always pumped out the white smoke when I start it the first time each day when it's cold outside. On a good cold morning I can fog up the whole block until it warms up.
On your whistling noise, are you sure it's not time for an air filter change or maybe it's sucking air through some crack in the air filter system. Air restriction could account for some smoke and if it's sucking wind trying to get enough air through that does make a whistling noise. In my case when mine starting whistling like that I change clamps hoses and boots trying to figure out where the leak was and never could get it to stop. Found out later that my kid had snuck in there on me and pulled the silencer ring off the turbo cause he thought it sounded better like that. I was a little PO'd after that one.

Not a bad idea to change the air filter but according the the gauge on the filter it's fine. Does that gauge really work?

Alright what's a good cheap filter. No BHAF or AFE or Scotty now. There are Checkers, Napa, Autozone, Parts America ect close. Any brands to stay away from?

white smoke when cold is normal for a diesel...white smoke after fully warmed up is not however especially on an electronic pump.....to be safe start checking for cracked or leaky lines and rubber hoses

a whiney noise is also wheel bearings sometimes

and last but not least i assume urs is NOT a common rail (or is it?) and therefore u should have that lemon of a pump (vp44) checked out

I'll be watching this thread...I have a sound that sounds almost like the sound of electronic interference in a radio...the same sort of whistle/whine. Its from outside the passenger compartment...almost sounds like it might be the transmission. I only get it at around 3/4 throttle or more.

I also get the smoke at startup, but like has been said, its normal in cool weather.

NH I would also look at this high pitched noise either being the air cleaner or turbo whine. If you only hear it while your into the pedal than it is probably your air intake sucking extra air through, if it's the turbo you will most of the time hear the faint drone anytime your showing boost pressure. If your wheel bearings are in bad enough shape to make this much noise your in trouble. You should just be able to feel your hubs, if they are to hot to touch after some miles then you need to be checking something out there, otherwise I wouldn't even worry about that area. Differentials can use some prevenetive maintenance once in a while but bearings are usualy pretty good in these trucks. I changed mine out after the 100,000 mark because one was going bad on me, could feel the heat radiate from it but I spend alot of time driving on country lanes and pastures.

Alright I replaced the air filter and the truck sounds much different/better. The old filter was so plugged it's not even funny that's what I get for reading that note on the filter gauge to not replace until x %

The wistle drone is now gone and spoolup is much faster and there is much more black smoke shooting out the tail pipe.

I can't believe I over looked something so simple
