which truck
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hi, I'm new here and would like some opinions.
I'm going to be in the market for a new to me truck. I currently drive a ford 7.3 psd with a few mod. It has beed good to me, but the mpg (mid 16's on a good day)aren't what you cummins guys are getting. thats why I'm considering a cummins.
I don't know which years are good/bad. I do know that I want 1) quad cab, IF I can get a baby seat in the back (1st one due in Jan), can't afford a 3rd gen 4dr 2) 4x4 3) manual tranny what's better 5 or 6. Do I want a 12v or a 24v? pros/cons Also I can only afford mid $teens

Wifes 1995 psd f350 4x4 5sp crewcab gets 19mpg. Don't understand anything under the hood but it's been putting along for 200,000 miles. My w250 reg cab 5sp does 20mpg. Both 355 rears.

Any year with a Cummins in it is a good year.
I think you'll want a quad cab (started in '98) for decent baby access, so you should look at '98 and '99 trucks to get a good one on your budget. With those trucks you can have a 5 speed or a 5 speed, whichever you like better. '98 12 valve quad cabs are somewhat rare and can be pricey if the seller knows what he has, but there are good deals to be found. The 24 valve is prone to fuel supply problems but there are several fixes. I would not avoid 24 valve trucks.

I can buckle 3 granddaughters in the back. Enough room for up to 10-12 year child. Looks like you know what you're doing. Looks like you will start over with mods on a different truck. Bummer just to get a back seat, isn't it?

FOr your budget
You can afford either or, If you have the teens you can probly find a slightly older 12V for a good price, Im not bein biased here, I love the 24V infact i want a 24V for a secondary ride once i can afford one, not sure if second or third gen yet tho. I also love the quad shorty.. It all comes down to personal preference, If you want them just to be a baby hauler for now, a quad cab is a must, and you should look at the 98 and up with the quad cab option. You will most likely wind up with a 24V due to the 12V with the quad cab bein a rarity to find this day in age, or if found, kinda pricey. 24V are a little more complex to work on due to most of them bein all electronic, if you are good with that then it shouldnt be as compelx to you, a 12V is mechanically inclined, runs on only one wire, Fuel mileage is about the same for both, i get mileage that some 24V get, i get 16-18 city and 20-21 on the hiway. I cannot say anymore than what has already been said. As far as the five or six speed, six speeds are better inclined for towing, but the mileage is about the same for both of them, u just have one more gear to chose from with the six speed, im perfectly happy with my five tho, and tow just fine with it, so again, its all preference, good luck, and welcome once again to DTR!!
