Which Rotella?
My dealer suggested I buy Rotella oil at Wal-Mart and bring it in for their use in order to save money ;D.
Now I don't want to start a long discussion on oils. Just tell me which Rotella do I buy? I can look up the weigh, but there are several different types of Rotella and I am confused.
This is the first oil change on the HO Cummins at 3500 miles.
Thanks, Billy

Re:Which Rotella?
Just bought a case from Sams, Rotella-T 15w40 (6) 1 gallon bottles, for 35.68. Also, check the dealer's prices on oil filters. I'll bet you can get a better deal from Geno's (www.genosgarage.com) or even a local Cummins parts store

Re:Which Rotella?
Your truck is under warranty, so you have to go by the recommended drain intervals. Plus, Rotella Synthetic really isn't synthetic; it's a class 3 lubricant. So save yourself some money and use plain 'ol 15W-40 Rotella T. Keep in mind I found out about Rotella Synthetic after buying 15 gallons of it (on sale I thought) at Wal-Mart. :

If you decide not to use the dealer's filter check with your local Cummins parts house and pick up a Fleetguard Stratopore for around $8.00.

You would be hard pressed to find ANYONE that would sell you an oil filter for more $ than your local Dodge dealer will. Find a local Cummins dealer or buy Fleetguard Stratapores from Geno's Garage online.

Re:Which Rotella?
Hi, I use the standard ole 15W40 Shell Rotella-T, white label (not the blue label).
I didn't do my first oil change until 6500 miles (light duty per service schedule says 7500). Oil came out really, really clean much to my surprise as I was expecting it to be black as night, but I was also told not to do the first change too soon in order to allow for a good break in. Being confused at that point, I just compromised between 5000 and 7500 and did it at 6500, but will probably go at 5000 mile intervals for normal service from here on out.
For the first change, I used a Mopar filter (big $$$$), but have since ordered from Geno's Garage, a neat service package with the Cummins Fleetguard Strataspore (sp) oil filters etc...much less $$$ over the long haul and meets Cummins warranty requirements. I was told by a reliable source that the Mopar filters are actually Fleetguards with an outside label change....but not sure about that.
Also, the Rotella will have a unique and distinctive odor to it once it heats up for about 500 miles but that is normal....it kinda grows on you...lol...you'll like it.
