Wheel Question 17" Or 18"

I AM CONFUSED, WHICH ACCORDING TO MY WIFE, IS NOT HARD TO DO.
I AM LOOKING TO PUT NEW WHEELS, AND TIRES ON MY 04.5 DODGE 2500, I HAVE FOUND 4 EAGLE MODEL 102 WHEELS 17X9" THE SHOP THAT WAS GOING TO DO MY LIFT SAID THAT I HAD TO RUN 18" WHEEL, BECAUSE THEY WOULD EVENTUALLY RUB THE CALIPERS AND IF THEY PUT THE WEIGHTS IN THE INSIDE OF THE WHEEL WHEN THEY BALANCED THEM.
I AM NOT SURE WHAT TO DO, IS THERE ANYONE WHO HAS RUN INTO THIS PROBLEM, THEY TOLD ME THAT AS THE BRAKES WEAR THE CALIPER WOULD MOVE IN, AND THERE WOULD BE A CLEARANCE ISSUE, I WOULD GREATLY APPRECIATE SOME INPUT.
I WILL BE PUTTING ON 315-70-R17 BFG ALL TERRAIN, (NEW TAKE OFFS FROM AN H-2 HUMMER), AND AMERICAN EAGLE MODEL 101, OR 102 17"X9" WHEELS, WILL I NEED TO PUT ON A LEVELING KIT TO RUN THOSE, JUST INCASE I GET THE BUG TO PUT THEM ON BEFORE I GET THE LIFT MONEY, I WOULD LIKE TO RUN THEM FOR A WHILE BEFORE I LIFT THE TRUCK.
LASTLY I WAS WONDERING IF SOMEONE COULD GIVE ME SOME IDEA OF WHAT BACKSPACING, AND OFF SET I NEEDED TO RUN ON THOSE WHEELS, AND IF I COULD RUN A WHEEL WIDER THAN 9" AND NOT RUB WHEN TURNED LOCK TO LOCK ON THE STEERING.

THANKS--JOE

wheel size

Joe - I am running 17 x10 and Goodyear MTR 305's with no problems what so ever. I'm sure others will chime in and say the same thing, after they get through busting your chops about the caps. Anyone running any size tire 315/70/R17 - 305/70/R17 - whatever are on 17" wheels.

I am running BFG 315/70R/17s on the 17x8 stock Dodge Alloys. I stayed with the stock rims because I couldnt find any 17s with the correct back spacing, at least ones that I could afford. With the correct back spacing there is no problem with the 315s. I do have a 2" front leveling kit, but with the stock rims I dont think it is necessary.

The larger brakes and calipers certainly must be considered when looking for after market rims.

In order to run 35" or 315/70R17 tire you will need to run a wheel that has the same back spacing as stock rims. That backspacing is around 6.25" to 6.5", I can't remember exactly. The only aftermarket rims I know of that will fit are made by Weld Racing for Kore suspensions at http://www.koreperformance.com/. Any more offset will cause the tire to hit the back of the front fender as you turn and the suspension compresses. A leveling kit will not solve any rubbing problems because you aren't actually changing the distance between the axle and body at full compression.

The stock brake calipers are pretty close to the 17" wheels, but I'm not sure I believe that they will hit weights mounted on the inside of the rim. I'm assuming your talking about using tape weights that actually mount to the center and inside of the rim. I would get a few more opinions from other tire shops before your convinced to spend the money on 18" rims.

Big Joe,

You may not like the look of the H2 wheels, but if you do, remember that they are the perfect width and backspacing for our trucks. Only need to be opened up a little in the center to clear the hub. And the Dodge caps can be modified to fit too. Many of us are running them and love them. I've got over 30,000 miles on my set and am very happy. Just a thought.

Big Joe,

2 weeks after buying my truck last year, I mounted AE 102s on BFG 315/70/R17 on my rig. There was no problem with the 17" wheels as far as the brakes go. However, the backspacing/offset put the wheel/tire way too far out past the fender for my liking. It would trash the side of the truck. So I took them off and did some extensive research to try and find a wheel which was very close to the stock backspacing and offset so that the wheel would not stick out past the wheel well/fender area.

The short of it is: Weld has (or at least did have) three different options, but all three are "bling" wheels , that is, larger than 18". So you are limited on tire choices. I also didn't like the look of any of them so they didn't work for me. Next, Boyd Codington will make you a custom wheel - to your specs (offset/backspacing). This options was too expensive for me. Finally, I found only one wheel that is very close to stock backspace/offset and looked good to me. That is the 17" American Racing Python. I have been running these since January. I have had no problems with the wheels and the BFG AT 315/17's have held up great. I did need to add Revtek spacers to stop the rubbing on the inside fender. Good luck.
