what's up with my truck?

Hey guys
New to the forum.
My 01 has 80k, no probs so far. Yesterday, the truck when coasting in gear at ~900 rpm started to run like ****- stumbling, no power, wouldn't get over 1000 rpm. Shut it down, restarted, and it ran fine.
Thought maybe water in fuel, clogged filter. CHanged filter, and the same think happened 3 times today. Same symptoms, cured itself by shutting down and restarting immed.
What's up???
I'm a gas guy. This is my (hopefully dependable) work truck.
Thanks.

Re:what's up with my truck?

Sorry to be a newbie and jump into the forum with a question, but didn't know what to search under. I've got buddies saying 'you need a lift pump' bla bla bla, but that might be because that's the only diesel part they know..
One other thing I could mention, when the motor was running poorly it was also blowin a bunch of blue smoke. I don't have a Fuel press guage so I can't tell you what that was...
Thanks again.

Re:what's up with my truck?

I have run into the same problem, I pulled the codes today at work and came up with P0216 *Injection pump timing failure*. I have talked with my dealer and they will cover the VP44 & Lift Pump under the 100K warrenty. Get to a shop and check for codes, then go from there. 8)

Re:what's up with my truck?

02-
Did your truck just start doing this out of the blue? I had heard that there was a lift and/or injector pump recall but I checked my VIN and only an electrical connector in the 'power distribution center' came up. I always thought that was called the fuse block...whatever.
Should I expect the truck to die for good (until I get it fixed) shortly?

Re:what's up with my truck?

Yep, just started it right out of the blue. I was cruzin down the hwy at about 70, went to pass a car and it just hit a wall, no power and the pedal was down to the floor. Didn't run rough or studder, just lost power like right now. It came back after about two seconds. Then it did it again a couple days later. I reset the APPS sensore and it drove great for about 2-3 weeks then started to do it again. Some times it would just do it for a split second other times it would be a mile or two down the road before the power was back on. I replaced the APPS last night ($353.60) and it made no differance. I pulled the codes at work today and came up with a P0216 * Injection pump timing failure*. After talking with dodge up here about ordering a new pump, I talked with the service dept. and they said the Injection pump and the Lift Pump are covered under the 100K warrenty deal no questions asked. So mine is going to the shop in the morning. And of course it ran perfect all the way home tonight.

I supose it could take a major dump before you get it fixed. Have your cell phone ready. :-X

Re:what's up with my truck?

Check this link for a list of the codes and what they mean.

http://www.troublecodes.net/chrysler/

The other day my truck set a code. Turned the key off and on three times (leaving it on the 3rd time) without starting. Then the codes were shown in the odometer. The first code in the PCM was 1693, it then came to what looked like the end but waiting a bit longer, it next showed the codes in the ECM which was a P0234 (overboost - I think the Banks Ottomind knew it was about to be replaced and went on strike). Finally when it was finished with the display it showed the mileage. Bottom line is I "think" the P1693 is telling you that a code had been set in either the PCM or the ECM. Is it possible you have a second code set and did not wait for the show to end?

Good luck,

George

Re:what's up with my truck?

Yeah, after it gave me the 1693 code it read 'done' and then it returned to the mileage. I thought of that, and went out and checked again, but that's all.
Thanks for the idea. Keep 'em comin!

Re:what's up with my truck?

The more I search on 1693 and the more old posts I read, I'm getting to thinking that this code doesn't mean all that much. I don't know if I should feel better or worse? I need to figure out what is going on with this motor. Someone suggested that a scanner can pick up codes that the ignition sequence will not show...true?
Anyone else experienced this loss of power/ rough running that goes away at restart?

Re:what's up with my truck?

DTC means Detected Trouble Code in your ECM (electronic control module, or PCM Power control module. Sounds like a VP-44

Re:what's up with my truck?

VP44 sounds like the problem child. Our computors were down today at work so I couldn't look it up for ya, but I would bet your pump is gone. If you are under 100k miles, take it to your dealer and have them run the scan if it come up with the lift pump or the injection pump you are covered under warrenty, if it's not eigther of those two it will cost ya $80.00 for the scan and they will tell you whats wrong. Well $80.00 up here anyway. Call em and see what they say. :-

Re:what's up with my truck?

OK, so I need a lift pump. As I'm under 100K, it should be a warranty deal, right? I hope the dealer doesn't try to dick me over service records....
By the way, how much of an effect would fuel filter change intervals have on pump life?
