What's a TAG?

I'm just a little out of the loop here, I read about people putting TAG's in their trucks. What's a TAG, where can I check it out on the internet, and where can I buy one if I like what I see?

TAG = Turbo Air Guide

It was developed by the fine folks over at Diesel Power Products in Pasco, WA. Here's their website with tons of info on the TAG.

Would the TAG for your truck fit the third gen turbo?

I've read somewhere that the TAG's will seriously quiet your turbo, is this true? Not a big deal, but I am sure there are more guys out there like me that likes to listen to them sing...

It does. That is exactly the reason I purchased it. With my B1 turbo, custom intake, and BHAF, turbo whistle will absolutely run you out of the cab on a long trip. The TAG III has made my B1 as quiet if not quieter than stock. If you look at a picture of the TAG III, it has kind of a built in silencer ring designed for aftermarket turbos that you can't get with a ring. It has also eliminated the turbo bark at overdrive shift, or at least made it to where I can't hear it. Don't get caught up in the hype though, because it does absolutely nothing else. No other benefits noted or expected. Just an expensive silencer ring. I had purchased the original TAG when they first came out. I did not get any benefit from that one either and eventually sold it. I did remember how it quieted the turbo down, so it fit the bill for what I was looking to do this time.

About half of the folks I know that try the TAG wouldn't give it back for nothing. They seem to find something, however small, actual or perceived, that they like about it. The other half sell it and brand themselves an idiot for believing the hype to begin with. So, you will have to be your own judge. May be dependant on driving style or something. Myself on the other hand, nothing other than giving me a super quiet B1 turbo. So, I guess I wouldn't give mine up either. Especially not after what I had to pay for it. Just to be clear, I'll run through the differences noted after the TAG III install.

No better fuel mileage in town. No worse mileage in town. No better mileage on the HWY. No worse mileage on the HWY. No better mileage towing. No worse mileage towing. No quicker spool-up noticed. No slower spool-up noticed. No higher max boost attained. No lower max boost attained. No drop in EGTs. No rise in EGTs. No noticeable gain in power. No noticeable loss in power. No less smoke. No more smoke. Quieter turbo....YES. Would I buy another? If all I wanted was a quieter turbo...YES. Sure wish they were cheaper though. Awful lot of money for a silencer ring, but effective as there really are no other options for these aftermarket screamers.

Not trying to be a smart butt, but I get a million questions on "does it help this", or "does it hurt this", so I figured I would clear all that up to start with. Given my own results, if your looking for a performance gain of any kind, I would recommend spending your money elsewhere. If you have an aftermarket turbo that is just too loud for you or maybe surges really bad on shifts, get a TAG III.

OK, thanks. All my driving is hwy, from Pelly Crossing to Whitehorse, about 600kms return. My gas milage seems quite dismal, so I'm going to throw my paper air filter back in, i'm only getting about 650kms on the tank full. But cruising speed is around 120kph. I love my truck.

The results using the TAGs is as varied as our trucks are. Most seem to experience quicker turbo spool up and comment about the engine running smoother. Some report it works best to quiet down turbo sound especially the 2nd gen trucks using the Scotty intakes with cowl induction. Some have noticed better mileage and less smoke. Most of the mileage gains are seen under towing conditions, but some do see increases empty as well.

I have the TAGIII. My mileage and power while towing went up and my EGT's went down... BUT... I also installed the Scotty and Banks Full 4" all at the same time. I can tell you that I would not change a thing, I like the way it all work's together. Hard to tell if it's any quieter... Banks makes it hard to hear the turbo I will let you know after my new Cool Hose arrives and is installed, they say this will make the turbo sing a little bit more. I can tell you that empty cruising boost is about 2 lbs less.

Still pondering a AeroTurbine to help the dreaded drone
