I believe their is no road tax on farm fuel or what is also called off road, their for it would be less expensive. Dye is added so officials can identify if highway vehicles are using it , mostly commercial vehicles but normal public if caught can be fined. At one point their was a difference in the sulfur content , off road not being a low sulfur, I think now the only difference now is the color, but I could be wrong.

You are correct the only differance is the dye. The dye is added when we load it at the pipeline by entering the blend code for tax exempt diesel. It is all ultra low sulpher diesel. Get caught steeling from the goverment by using off road diesel & the IRS will be after you. I hear it's a sizeable fine.

first fine is $100 per gallon that your tank holds. (i.e. if you have a 30+ gallon tank you'll be fined $3,000+ dollars by our fine government). Second fine is up to $10,000..BUT if you are to burn a little used motor oil every blue moon in your fuel it stays BLACK and is really hard to tell what color it is, bc buring your own oil changes isn't illgeal.

$10,000.00 is what some folks have been tagged for doing this. Depends on the jurisdiction and the Officer that is testing.
One thing you want to be careful of is refusing to let them take a sample...thats the end game to your trip right there...and the costs go way up...seizure of vehicle, fines upon fines and now even more reason for them to spend more time with you.

Also, if you ran dyed fuel by mistake or whatever reason and have not yet run at least three tanks of regular taxed clear diesel through, they can find the residual traces of the dye when tested. This isn't always an issue and again depends on your situation.

Tankeryanker knows his stuff...when are you moving on from your 30 plus years of hauling fuel?
