Very top mileage assuming that you are driving in the mid 60's mph wise, I would say would be in the low 20's. Slower you go the less fuel you use but time is money in some cases. If you don't need a truck just wanting a truck but needing to drive 500 miles a day. I would look into getting a tdi jetta basically use 10 gallons vs 23ish.
2wd 24v bump up timing using a programmer, highway tires with max psi, and you can do some research regarding some other things that can possibly increase mileage. 2 stroke oil in every tank as well.
Best of luck, it is a buyers market right now.

Going from Denver to Grand Junction and back (about 500 miles round trip) I averaged 24.7 mpg (math, not computer). I have 4.10 gears on 33" tires, and I was empty the whole way, but I was doing 75 mph. This was also through the rocky mountains.
On my trip to salt lake city from denver (went through Wyoming) I got about 24.2 mpg, and made it on one tank. I was pretty empty when I got there though

Holy Schneike, Batman! I would've guessed in the low 20's, but over 24mpg doing 75 is unbelievable! Especially with 4.10 gears and 33" tires in the mountains.... SLC to DEN is about 535 miles on Mapquest and should've only taken 22 gallons or a little over 5/8 of a tank at 24.2 mpg. Low fuel light or 30 gallons(ish) used should have propelled you over 700 miles.... Just curious....

Note, I consider 1/4 tank as empty. I don't like going under that as sometimes Diesel can't be found at some stations. Plus, I don't like the thought of having to bleed the fuel system...

22mpg with the 98.5 driving around 60 all day. my uncles truck is a stick with stock tires and a 5'' exhaust, 3.55 rear and gets a 26 if he takes it easy, he got 29 on a long trip down 95 but he drives the speed limit.

<sigh> I only get 14-15mpg on my '01 3500 4X4 dually.
Not sure why its so low. 4x4 dually definitely doesn't help, as does the auto. If I put the edge on milage and drive easy I'll get almost 15mpg, on setting 4 and a heavy foot it goes down to 13mpg. This is city/highway, my commute is about 100km round trip.
I know that fuel isn't as good up here as what you guys get. Last year I went to Utah and got better milage towing 7000# than I do empty here.
My '92 with a upgraded TC, timing bump, 12cm housing and minor pump mods got 16-18mpg, slightly better than when it was stock.
