Best oil?
Not sure if it is he best but have read good things on Cummins site and heard others say they like it. Me, i've been using Rotella or Delo, whichever i can get the best case price on at Sams club or Costco. Have not had any complaints so far with either, except for the normal Rotella smell.

This is going to come down to a personal preference. I run Cen-Pe-Co in mine but you have to know a dealer to get it and it is about $13/ gallon in 2 gallon jugs or $10-$11 by the barrel.

Amsoil all the way........
I have personally proven this many times over and will NEVER switch. It IS as good as they claim, and better, I think.
There are many programs besides straight retail that will allow you to purchase at dealer prices for your own use.

I have been running the Valvoline Premium Blue as per the mfr recommendations, the CI-4. Seems it has been replaced with a CJ-4 and the oil tests done by TDR did not have good things to say about the CJ-4. Valvoline is offering the original CI-4 under the Premium Blue 'Classic' label, saw it in the midwest truk stops but I understand it may not be available in the west according to a member who called Valvoline and spoke to a rep??
If I cannot get the Premium Blue Classic, then I'm going to the Amsoil 15w40. All the rest of the fluids in my truck have been changed to Amsoil, so I guess it's time for the engine too.

how often are you guys changing your oil? i was looking in the manal and it said 7500 or 15000 miles depeding on drinving conditions. did i read it wrong? what are you guys doing? thanks

I won't be putting any CJ-4 in my truck. It'll probably be either Amsoil or Schaeffers synthetic after the 20,000 mile mark. Just find an oil you like and is readily available and stick with it.

Seriously-- what T-boe said. Use a good quality DIESEL oil, change it when you need to and you'll be ok...
That said... I use schaffers and an amsoil bypass filter and do lab analysis to make sure everything is OK. We can argue all we want on the oil, but the lab analysis tell me how the oil is really doing and when to change it... money well spent.

I use Royal Purple and have on all of my vehicles. (changed on a routine basis) I have seen no issues and the oil comes out nice and slick after 15,000 miles(I don't do this all the time, only when I'm really busy) I also use a Wix filter (Napa).

truck had a horrible grind when shifting, especially third. I mean bad. It didn't matter how you shifted. Changed to Amsoil severe gear and after about 150mi, grind is totally and completely gone and shifts almost too easy.
I have tried all the additives, MMO, Lucas, TCW3, PS, etc. Never seemed to make a difference. I recently tried the Amsoil diesel concentrate and the motor is actually quieter and idles smoother. We'll see about mileage gains as I am a skeptic here.
