well...it's about time i asked this question.....about me old getrag

Aight ya'll.....this is how my getrag is running:
When cold, grinds going into third...only when cold
When i throw the tranny into fifth, it sometimes works smoothly; however, sometimes it will not go in directly....i have to swing the stick wide to the passenger side to make it slide in.
If i do not swing the stick wide to the passenger side whenever downshifting from fifth, the stick will fall out of fifth, but the tranny locks me out of all the other gears, so i must place it back in fifth and swing it out wide again.
Sometimes, when running the truck fairly hard, the tranny does not want to slide into fifth at all.
Lastly, if i have to engage the four wheel drive, say when stuck, and begin rocking the truck, the tranny seems to lose all gears when it gets hot. It does not want to go into first, only reverse seems to work. This usually lasts for a few minutes until i fool around with the stick enough that it seems to click back into place.
I was told by a mechanic that the shifting forks were off, perhaps the synchros, and that if i was going to fix that...I might as well rebuild the tranny. Many days the tranny works well, but these occurences continue to pop up..and I want to fix it. WHAT DO I NEED TO DO? How much should a rebuild cost?.....any beefing up i need to do?

Assuming you have checked the fluid level and have overfilled it? if not start there....but...
Sounds like the synchros are going out at the least, and maybe teh shift forks.
The "top end", which contains the shift rods and forks, is a seperate part than teh tranny itself. You can replace it as a whole or just the shift forks, etc. but i found that doing it piece by piece is just as expensive as replacing the whole top end.

You can order seal/bearing/synchro kits for around $250-300. If your gonna have the tranny pulled, its worthwhile generaly to go ahead and put in a new clutch if your is the original, might as well while ya got it out.
A "stock" replacement clutch will run ya a couple hundred...

teh longer you run it with bad synchros, the greater teh risk of damaging the gears and shafts..high $$ to find and replace...

A basic R/R on the tranny cost me a littleover $400 in labor, plus the parts

this thread is the blow by blow of what it cost me when I let mine go too long before repairing it....https://www.dieseltruckresource.com/...d.php?t=113219

Sounds like u may have a roll key coming out of one the fork's. Hanging it in 5th gear, U will have to pull the tranny, to remove the shifter top, I would go for new bearing's seals syncho rings and get new shim's. Check the slider's on the forks, look closely at the roll key hole's u may need to drill them out an go bigger to make them fit tight.

What oil are you running? RP Synchromax really helped my 3rd gear shifts, especially when cold.

I find 3rd works better if you don't rush it.
