Well,that didnt work.....O/D

****,these O/D related threads sure are getting prolific, huh?

Put in some new solenoids today, and it STILL wont go into O/D!!!!!
I replaced the 2 side-by-side solenoids that bolt on as a unit, into the side of the valve body. They have the main internal harness integrated into them and they feed electrical to the other little solenoids off to the pass. side of the tranny.
What exactly are the other two components?Im guessing the one with 2 wires(black and purple) is the temp sender, but what about the other?

And yes Ive already changed out/calibrated a new TPS.
Verified that the TC lockup works in 3rd with the O/D button off and on.
Changed the little external, trans output sensor on the drivers side.
Cruise control works fine.
All other gears are awesome(good condition BD trans/convertor) 47RE.

At this point Im gonna have to roll some 44's in order to get the revs down on the highway!!

Woww, sounds like you are lucky your truck holds together by the looks of your sig. Goes to show how good a Cummins is, but the rest of the truck is iffy...

Are you working off BD recommended fixes or just throwing parts at hoping to fix the problem?

Since the OD problems seems to affect everybody, regardless of who built the trans,Ive been using general info and feedback from this site to make the calls.Im pretty sure the O/D system for the BD 47RE is the same as any other 47RE.....after all,it just the cruising gear, not a power pulling/performance gear.

I have been kinda throwing parts at it,but also using testing proceedures I learned here to narrow it down. The old TPS was scetchy so I replaced it just to be sure. The trans sensor was only 15 bucks,no biggie. The rest of the tran's behavior has improved with the install/adjustment of the other parts,so its been a net gain so far.Its not too big a deal to purchase and install parts,it is after all a work truck,so its all buisness expenses.Tranny shop wanted $700 to replace the solenoids that Im pretty sure are the ones I just did,so Im still WAY ahead. The solenoids cost me $125.00 at Napa.
But Ive yet to fire the silver bullet that gets me back into 4th gear.Just need a little more feedback/info.....

Massyman, yea she sees a LOT of use and abuse.Having some 8 different guys drive her every day takes its toll. And a lot of them are idiots who have no clue about diesels or proper towing.A set of front pads last about 10K miles and were on our 5th set of front rotors at 170K miles.Track bar gets replaced every year, the body is HAMMERED,but she always pulls through and the suspension has done very well so far, all things considered.Im probably the only one who takes care of any maintenence or repairs. The plus side is once the buisness is through with her(probably around 200K,shell be all mine to take home)

Try adding a temporary mystery switch and see if that solves the problem, it can at least eliminate that part of the equation.
Jump across the two wires to the trans temp sensor with a 1000 ohm resistor to test that circuit. This will fool the pcm into thinking the fluid is at normal temp.

Just to be sure, which one is the temp sensor?
Id just replace the stupid thing if I knew which one it was and where to get it,cant cost too much.No one can find the thing in their parts lists. The external one is common, but not mine.
Remeber,I have the internal temp sender,so its not exactly simple to get to.Draining fluid and dropping the pan multiple times aint hard, but it can be messy and boring...

I've never had to mess with an internal temp sensor, can't help you there, but if you can find the two wires that feed it and trick the pcm with a resistor it may help eliminate the dropping the pan mess.
