I welded in my own gooseneck, and i haven't towed any yet, when i told my buddy about it he asked me if i heated the metal before i welded it, he said that the weld would burn in better, i ahve not heard of people doing this in the past, and have seen plenty of weld in hitches, it is about 2" thick and i made 3 good passes across the plate on each side, someone please reasure me this is safe before i go latchin' to a trailer! Thanks guys!

you do know that welding a gooseneck hitch on to a 3rd gen voids the frame warranty.

Personally I wouldn't weld a gooseneck to any truck. The frame won't be able to flex as much at that point and eventually the welds will be fatigued. At minimum I would put some bolts in there for extra assurance.

I don't like weld in hitches either, but I have owned a few.
Pre heating thicker metals always helps. Post heating stupid thick (like 2 inch!) is never a bad idea either as it will allow even cooling. Really though, as long as you made a good bevel and had a welder with enough ***** to pentrate you should be fine.
All of my Weld in hitches were 1/2 to 3/8s plate as well.
