Water Pump - why now?

Beautiful Jan day - 9* last night and 15* now.....

Wife needed to get her car out of the driveway so I cranked the truck and backed out.....
That's when I saw IT
That telltale yellow/green color of ANTIFREEZE !!

Pop the hood and sure enough water almost running from under the water pump and over the side of the thermostat. Pull the radiator cap and the level is down ~ 1 1/2".

I really can't complain - besides the front end rebuild when I first got the truck 50K and 5 yrs ago, this is the first major part to go bad. Besides, I've got 335+K on it.

Cotton Bowl - or water pump ???
68* with my feet up and a bowl of salsa w/a bag of chips - or freezing my edit off in 15* weather???
I really don't have anywhere important to go, nothing that can't be put off for a couple of days or a week... Like when the temps get warmer - at least into the high 20's.
NO CONTEST !!!!
The pump WILL wait.
But the question is do I get a Cummins pump or NAPA ?

BTW - what's the part number??

i went with a duralast from "vatozone" as well. as easily and often as you usually have to replace them, spend the $50 there for one. the cummins is no different, just more expensive as you could probably guess.

Cummins

I would not fool with aftermarket for the $50 you might save.

When I did my KDP, I noticed about 1/8" end-play in mine. So I changed it, don't need to be on the side of the road wishing I had.

There is a difference in water pumps, NON INTERCOOLED trucks had open impellers and didn't flow as much water. INtercooled trucks had a "cage" around the impellers and pushed more water...

I got made recently when I got a water pump from PEP-BOYS . it was a BOSCH water pump...yes BOSCH as in $$$$$$ injectors, pumps, etc...

They listed it for 89-93 on the computer, no differences.

and i got one with an open impeller like a non intercooled truck would have...

The whole reason for the water pump swap was the old one has a squeeky bearing...the truck now has a non squeeky water pump but does not move as much water and its apparent when you're on the highway, the temp gauge is a full 1/2 space width hotter running 71mph (where my dad cruises, no exhaust drone. LOL)

So try to avoid BOSCH ....cost was $62 so you know... NO core charge

Here is Non i/c style ....what you want to avoid.

Heres the newer style the 93 HAD on it...this is what you want

The one that ADVANCE AUTO lists, has the closed impeller- http://shop.advanceautoparts.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_Water-Pump-ASC_3130932-P_54_R|GRPCOOLAMS_581446918___#

NAPA lists 3- get the DELPHI one (most expensive $81)....see it has the closed impeller as the other 2 don't.
http://www.napaonline.com/Search/Res...99&Ntk=Keyword

Hope this helps...Avoid Bosch since they only list 1 type.... I reccomend the ADVANCE AUTO pump...its very cheap and has the closed impeller design.

The one with the "closed" impeller is the one you want... my Dad and I learned this a long time ago from a guy named "JunkYardDog"...not sure if he's still a member.

The Cummins pumps are REBUILT, at least for a 90. It was twice as much as an Autozone, and for the life of me I couldn't see a difference. I was surprised that they were not new...Mark

Why now?

Because it's 15 degrees outside, that's why. This stuff never happens when it's 72 and sunny and you didn't have anything else to do.

Be glad it didn't happen 3 hours away from home with no tools in a snowstorm - that's the kind of timing I usually get.

.

Hmmm.

I think there may be 3rd style of pump. When I was searching for my pump I went by a nearby Case-IH dealer. The pump they showed me was an open impeller but the blades stuck straight up, not lying horizontally. The blades were also very skinny.

It resembled the upright blades on a blender....

The blades didn't angle outwards either. They just stuck straight up...or out. However you look at it.

It almost looked as if the pump wouldn't have been able to bolt up to the block because the blades would have hit the inner walls of the block.

The only other thing I can think of is the guy gave me the pump for an 8.3L Cummins.

Oh well.

Are 24v pumps backwards compatible with 12v's?

I have had several water pumps fail over the years on different vehicles. I have never had one not fail in the winter time. On Ford gassers you are in for a real treat changing one, as every thing on the front of the engine has at least one bolt through the water pump and has to be removed before you get to the water pump. A Cummins is a treat to change. Remove the belt, remove two bolts and you are half way there. When I changed my pump I used the lifetime NAPA pump and was done in a half hour.

Is that a thermostatblender or a blend-o-stat?

Are they available in 180* and 195*

Great for blending rust flakes and bars leaks

I got mine from carquest. 48.99 I think. the autozone pump just didn't look right and looked cheap. I wanted a cummins pump but it was 193.00 and they had no idea when they could have it by which I needed it that day. plus like others have said its remanned or recon. fairly easy project tho. Mine cashed out last winter I think, No leaks just locked up took out the new belt and tensioner I put on 2 months before. and the old belt and tensioner went right back on and are still on.

Mine went on a sunny 75 deg. day last summer. Not my usual luck. I went with a Gates replacement. Still made in America. Not a rebuilt. Gates number for your veh. should be 41181. http://www.gates.com/part_locator/in...cation_id=3598

Pulled the belt and checked the lower water pump bolt.....
Turned nearly 1/2 turn !

BUT - that didn't stop the leak

Nearly took off my hand trying to get that blasted belt back on....
Must be getting too old to work on these things....

Wonder how much Dodge will charge to replace with an vatozone pump ?
Or if they even will ?

I'd rather watch this than do it, esp in this weather ( even tho it's warmed up all the way to 22* )...
