went out to start the truck this afternoon and the water in fuel light was on. pulled both the traps. both were filled to the rim. emptied them. light still hasnt gone out. its gotten to dark to check the cables. is there a way for water to leach into the fuel system. the truck has been sitting for the last couple of days. its been pretty wet for those days. if anybody has any of ideas. it would be great.

Maybe they filled back up. Where is the second trap? I just know of the one on the fuel filter.

If the electrical plug on your filter gets wet it can give you a light.Take that plug apart and coat the contacs with elec grease.

There may not have been any water at all in your filter but rather sediment that bridged across the the sensors.
Good idea to clean the sensors at every filter change.

its called a fuel prefilter. its under the water seperator, above and forward the starter. when i popped mine it was full of water and had lots of black sticks in it.
this is where i found out about the prefilter.

When you say "both were filled to the rim" do you mean filled to the rim with water?

If thats the case then water is in your tank. If you mean fuel, then it is probably just moisture in the connector closest to the water in fuel sensor. Just locate th WIF sensor at the fuel filter housing, follow the wires from that to the connector, take it apart, shoot some wd-40 and reconnect.

If that takes care of the problem, then take it apart again and use some dielectric grease on the connector pins and socket to prevent it from happening again.

If that ain't it, then drain a little fuel from the filter using the drain lever, and check again. Check the look of the fuel also (looking for water).

If that ain't it then you either have a short in the WIF sensor or it's wiring, or as others have mentioned, water or junk is remaining in the lowest portion of your fuel filter housing. Pull the housing, and clean it, and check again.

The WIF sensor is just a cheesy plastic bung with two metal prongs. When water gets in the filter housing, it creates continuity between the two prongs and causes the light to light up. You can actually test it by unscrewing it from the filter housing and dipping the prongs in a cup of water.

But like I said, it is cheesy plastic and is prone to cracking. Good luck getting a new one. I ended up making one out of a brass fitting for about 5-6 bucks. Much better than the $90 price I got for th plastic one.

mine came on in the carwash, but then i was like whats going on, the dork who owned the truck before me broke the sensor wires so there is no conection to the sensor!!! so moister def huts it....lol

Clean out the trap eh?

Mine did the same thing, I just changed the filter last week, had some nasty black something in the bottom of the wif trap, the wif light never came on.

I sprayed brake cleaner in the trap to clean it, maybe that was a bad idea.

After the filter change, now the wif is always on. I just unplugged it for now. I pulled the wif drain 3-4 times now, no debris, but the light will still come on if i plug it back in. I just thought of buying a new wif sensor from Geno's Garage.com, or pulling the wif sensor to clean it out more.
