A guy has a 79 4 speed, looks pretty good and he's asking $2500. Is that a fair price? don't know how many miles and so on. What would a cherry one go for? Pro and cons? thanks

Diesel??

We bought one that we thought was in good shape for $2000 about a year ago...it was actually swiss cheese from all the salt in OH, and KY!

BUT, we just got back from Oklahoma with 4 of them (3 good ones, one JUNK!!!) for $1100.

Look it over VERY GOOD for rust...they're unibody and a ton of work if they're rusted out!!

$2500?!? How about $950...? That would be a fair price for a '79, if it was an 82 or 83, maybe $1500..but that's even a bit high.

Although truth be told, it's getting hard to find these in even close to "average" condition anymore, expecially the diesels as they can be run hard and put away wet, over and over (and most have been by now.) There's a little '82 green 4-door Rabbit for sale near me, same deal nearly cherry condition, but it's a Gas so it's not worth $500 in my book.

Maybe it's worth a bit more as it's nearly getting collectable now...

That's a tough call. All of the older diesel (Mercedes, VW's, etc.)vehicle are starting to take off in price. I just picked up an '83 Mercedes 300D with 304,000 on it and it runs like a top, and avg. 30mpg. It was an estate car and I picked it up for $200. All it needed was exhaust, brakes and shocks. for $2500 you can probably find something in pretty nice condition. All you need is to finds someone that doesn't realize what they have.

i wouldn't give anywhere near that much for an old vw diesel.they need valve adjustments every 20,000 miles and it'a a pain edited by admin,not to mention the 40,000 mile timing belts.if your after an older vw diesel look into the late 80's early 90's they had hyd valves,and were bigger with more power,and no noticable loss of milage.

i got an offer to buy one for 100 bucks ,... still runs, frame is shot .. think i should spring for it? 100 bucks is really nothing and ive seen the car run and drive before.

Depends what you want to do with it. I would pay 100 for one that has a good motor and bad body for a Triumph Spitfire Diesel conversion.

I bought a junker (good diesel motor, 5spd, rusted body) off e-bay 3-4 years ago for about $300. The last driver that I bought ('bout 4 years ago) was an '86 diesel 5-spd w/ decent body for about $900. It would have to be no rust, low miles, original owner, like new before I even thought about $2500.

The 4spd hurts it because it's really hummin' at 65mph. Look for a 5spd if you want 4-lane highway speeds.

i've heard of people using the rngines for generators,and for 100 bucks it would be well worth it.

If it were close by and ran, I'd buy it. I've still got plans for the two diesel parts cars that are in the back 40.

I've got a 48 hp from a 1980 Rabbit. Picked it up on ebay for $100. Still haven't decided what to do with it yet, but it's ready when I am.

I've got a 1980 DSL Wabbit, it get's 35-50 MPG depending on how you drive it. 35 with your foot kicking it as hard as you can and 50 if you baby it. the only way to kill it is to run into a deer! Mines killed two deer and an Owl, yes an Owl, I've got a KILLER WABBIT! I paid $1250 and then had to put an Injection pump on it. It did not like low sulphur fuel, started pouring out, Cost $752, then the head gasket started to leak, Early 79-80 1.5 were bad for this, cost $400. Then Bambi's relatives attacked it on two differant occations, cost for front clip and radiator, around $400. If you want a Wabbit, I'll sell or trade you mine! The nice thing about them, they can be parked anywhere, smaller than a mini-Cooper! My former supervisor had one and added a turbo and some fuel, it ran like a sports car!
