VP44 swap...not as hard as it seems
For a long time vp44 swaps have kinda intimidated me, i was always afraid to try it. Well today I finally swapped one out for a buddy of mine...and it was really alot easier than I thought. After fighting for an hour with the truck cuz it wouldn't start, we got it pushed up the hill into the garage and the swap took about 2.5 hours start to finish...not bad at all.
Watching Diesel Dan's video of the swap last night really helped...wouldn't be too hard to do another one!!!

Ya know you can't turn off the LP after the starter's been bumped & and still yelled at TJ to turn it off. I couldn't get the plug back in the FF housing so i used my finger. the engine bay's nice and shiny now.

If you know what you are doing it can be an easy job. I watched my diesel mechanic do it in 1 and 1/2 hours on my truck. I couldn't believe it was that easy after reading all the horror stories. Eric

When my boss was working in the shop at a local shop that did many ISB's, he could get them changed in about an hour, from it getting put in the service bay to a wash and testdrive in that amount of time. His name is on approximately 160 service orders that VP44's were changed out on. Our own company pickup lost one couple weeks before Christmas, and it took him a little over an hour and a half, having not done one it about 3 years. I was very impressed to say the least.

Wes, he showed me how to do it.
I ended up using a generic gear puller like this that Scottsjeeprolet had in his tool box. All I had to do was go buy 2-M8x1.25 bolts that were at least 45mm long. Works perfect.

good to hear success stories on VP44 replacements, in terms of time and ease...looks like we can do 'em here at the cave since there are folks who have done them and becoming better and better at doing them. May come in handy down the road if my VP goes bad...

TJ let me know next time you need a gear puller i have a puller for pulling harmonic balancers that would have made it easy. i also have a gear puller for ones that do not have threaded bolt holes in it.
