VP44, low milage, no power

A year or so back my in tank lift pump went out, put on a F.A.S.S. At the time my mechanic (good friend) told me my injection pump would most likely die soon. At the time of my FASS install I was getting about 20 MPG. Mixed driving.

Fast forward to today. Finally got my gauges on, 15 to 17 psi fuel (idle) 10 to 13 WOT, 20 PSI Boost steady needle WOT, 7 to 10 cruising, EGT's at WOT get to about 13 before a shift and average about 7 to 8 at highway speed. On this latest trip up to ND the truck was running a few degrees higher than normal, 195*. Usually runs right at 190*.

Truck runs smooth, by my fuel mileage has gone in the crapper (was in the crapper before gauges too). 14 to 15 over a 550 mile trip, highway average 65 mph. In addition, there is just no power anymore. I really notice it when trying to pass. I change fuel filters regularly, checked boost for leaks, before I completed the install on the FP gauge I kicked the FASS on to flush the lines and banjo bolt and it shot diesel about 6 or 7 feet, so flow to VP44 is good.

Took the truck to my mechanic, checked codes, nothing set yet. He said there really isn't anything that could be causing the loss of power, except lack of fuel. Asked his gut feeling and he said the VP is probably worn and ready to give up the ghost. Not much else left to cause loss of power and mileage except starving the engine of fuel

Can you guys think of anything else I could/should check, or should I just bite the bullet, get a new vp44, and avoid getting stuck on the side of the road in the middle of nowhere?

Yep you did. And thanks for that. No codes so was just wondering if anyone had any ideas other than replacing the VP.

Wouldn't a bad map or injectors throw a code though? Or is there a situation where they wouldn't, or couldn't

Injectors normally will not. Map... I dunno. It could be within tolorance, but still be causing problems.

I'm not really a 2nd gen guy, buddy. I wish I was, I'd help you out.

I put a Air dog and a blue chip x pump on mine and now getting 14mpg with a mix of intown and highway driving calculated 435 mile to a tank. I'm not happy..... I think it is my pump have talked to chip once he says I sqaushed key on install and that I have to tear it back down to varify before we go any farther. coming up on 12 months so warranty will be gone soon so its got to happen soon. Something seems wrong, I'm getting 18-22 depending on where I drive,(lot of 70+ freeway driving with some in town will get about 19). I would start by cleaning the sensors you can get too. Short of having the injectors checked or the IP tested there is not much you can do but save pennies and hope for good timing.

You didn't bugger the key if the timing gear went on easily for the install. That possibility came up when my 1st MWFI pump threw a 0216 code. I clocked the key to match the old one then used the puller bolt in the gear to position the gear. It went on smooth as silk.

When MWFI got the pump back, they said I had gas in the fuel. I drained the tank then learned that gas, diesel & water will all separate out if left undisturbed. I kept the tank sample & nothing settled out. I also bought fresh B20 & regular diesel from the 2 stations I normally shop. The fuel from the tank is brighter yellow than regular diesel but matches the B20 I had put in for lubricity. Conclusion: pump builders can make a mistake & apparently won't take responsibility. I saw where shop labor for R&R is 6 hrs. I can do it quicker even without air.

I had whole front end tore off to fix k.d.p. when I replaced pump so gear was right in front of me.With that said I'm 99% sure I did not sqaush key.I talked to Chip thurs. he said that I have to pull pump and verify no bad key, then box up pump and send back. Give him a tracking # and he will send me a "new" pump. He did admit that it would not be the 1st time they have had issues. Just hate the idea of pulling it appart again thats why I bought the $2000 pump in the first place. They should rembirse me for the labor Nate

For starters get rid of the banjo bolts, they are very restrictive. If its the oem pump it is probably just worn out.
