Re:vp44 finally toast???

Codes do not always show up when the VP44 starts to go. However, P0263 code has been known to show up and if it does, there is no question that it indicates a faulty VP44. HTH

A studder or shudder? Mine shudders or surges at the same time as yours. mainly in 5th or 6th gear. Mine has done that since 30k miles and I now have 78k. It seems to be worse when the motor is cold. I don't think anybody has figured out what exactly causes that. If it's your pump I would think you would have more problems. Read some of the posts on vp44, and you can read what some of the symptoms are. Good Luck.

My question is this. If there is anything going wrong with the injection pump, will there be a code?
My truck has developed an intermittent, irregular 'studder'. Seems worst at lower RPM(1500ish), with a load. I can still feel it without a load, but not nearly as noticeable. When revs are up, the studder goes away. Or at least it seems too. With my superchip uninstalled, it's still there, but a lot less noticeable. Lift pump checks out good.
I've got a lot of miles on this pump(still original), and have been kinda waiting and expecting it to go anytime, but I also expected some sort of injection pump trouble code to come up when it does, and so far nothing.

[/quote] My '01 has also done this since the 30,000 mi mark..It now has 126,455...No one really knows what causes this, but alot of us have experienced it. Could be anything, or just a quirk of these trucks. I too thought it was the vp-44, but mine is fine..Something I did find out is that these trucks are very sensitive to any leaks in the fuel system. I finally chased down a very small leak and now the pressure never drops below 15psi, and the power is up too. I surmise that small air leaks into the fuel system will cause the stutter you're experiencing. Since I tightened everything up, mine has been fine. I'd check every fuel fitting from the tank to the return line. I found 4 slightly loose connections, but that was enough to create a disruption in the fuel pressure, possibly allowing for a little air in the system. Like I said, since tightening everything down, it runs great..
