Volt Meter

Volt Meter
When we start our engine the volt meter only registers about 12volts. Once under way the meter registers on the 14 volt side. Start up needle to the left, under power, to the right. I know our 5 year old factory batteries are getting a little weak and need changing soon but is this a normal condition?

Yes, different models illustrate the effects of the grid heaters differently. Some years cycle the volt meter in correspondence with the grid heaters cycling. Some models just show around 12 volts until the grid heaters stop or you reach 20 mph.

Really? They continue for that long! I never knew....
My volts drop to around 12-13 and it seems they stay until what seems like a relay or something kicks on and the alternator starts putting amps into the batteries.
I thought it was a voltage reg issue.
