Volant air intake

Has anyone tried the volant air intake?
I like the looks of it and the fact that it draws in cold air.
Any input would be appreciated.

thanks

I don't have one but worked on a CTD that had one awhile back, it looked like an excellent well made setup.
I couldn't see any advantage over a Scotty though.

I've got a Volant although I believe it may be an early model.

The Volant is a well made unit and uses the same bolts as the stock air filter to attach to the fenderwell.

I had previously installed a Scotty II and had drilled the hole in the cowl for that install. The Volant has a nipple approximately 4" in diameter in the back of the box facing the cowl which aligned fairly well with the hole I had previously drilled. Volant did not provide a hose or tube to connect the nipple to the hole (and the nipple did not come very close to the hole), so a trip to the plumbing department at the hardware store was necessary. There I found a piece of hose that fit snuggly over the Volant nipple, but also slipped inside the hole in the cowl. A tail light 4 1/4" round groumet in the hole in the cowl finished that side of the install fairly well.

The Volant also has an oblong hole in the side of the box next to the passenger inner fender that roughly corresponds, in location and shape, to the oblong hole in the inner fender that the stock air filter pulls its air through. The hole in the Volant box needed to be modified to align with the hole in the fenderwell and a tube needed to be modified to connect to the hole.

The Volant air filter is a reusable (oiled) cone shaped filter. I am not sure who made their filters for them but I measured it and found an AFE that corresponded in size and shape. The cleaning process is like that of K&N and AFE.

I measured both the Volant Filter and the Scotty II filter and found that the Scotty II has slightly more surface area. The Volant filter is shorter and has a larger diameter than the one used in the Scotty II.

The only reason I prefer the Volant is because it attaches to the fenderwell and looks finished. The Scotty II is not really attached to anything but the turbo tube. I never had any problems with the Scotty II and for the money it is probably a better buy.

I have not done any testing to see if one cooled better than the other.

Good luck,

George
