All the book says is GL5 w/o friction modifiers. Dealer says I must use Mopar @ 20 bucks a quart. I can get Mobil one or fully synthetic Valvoline for 10/quart. I wouldn't mind using More Mopar products if I didn't have to buy it from my dealer (I'm not fond of them). I know these topics about oil get beat up but I really don't like being held hostage by Mopar!
Also, I do have limited slip

I run Valvoline syn in mine with no problems. Now you can get 140 too.

I use the Mobil 1 synth 75-90, coming up on the third change at 45K with no problems.

go to a big truck parts place and get it in bulk (5 gallon)... I spent $140 after tax last week on synthetic 75/90... that's $7/qt. You can get a cheapie pump that fits the 5 gallon spiggot for a couple of bucks from Autozone and some tube to make life easier filling the diff. Or, make an investment at harbor freight, northern, tractor supply etc and get a lid/pump combo that fits over the 5 gallon bucket and really makes short work of filling diffs, trannies, etc. My days of hand-cramp squeezing those 1 qt bottles are over.

Throw your "dealer" a copy of the Magnusson Moss Warranty Act and tell them your rear axle fluid is now free. I personally run the GL5 Valvoline 75W90 in both differentials with no problems....readily available, too.

Under the guidelines set forth in the Magnuson Moss Act, the manufacturer "can" specify thier brand name oil "if" they can show that any other oil would be inferior and not perform. This not being the case here, I use Valvoline synthetic GL-5 75w-140 in my 10.5" AAM. So far so good.
They really pushed the limits with thier proprietary ATF+4. They must have lost in court. It should start showing up in autoparts stores soon under different names as ATF+3 clears the shelves.

If you have a limited slip you do not have to add a modifier? you can just use the valvolin and nothing else? I want to change mine also do i need a gasket?

The AAM's used in our RAM 2500's and 3500's have a reusable gasket and require no friction modifier.

I just got my Mag-Hytec cover and the local discount stores only have limited amounts of the oil. 1-3 quarts is all. I gotta stop at a bunch of stores to get my quantity. Any ideas on who stocks 5 gal pails.

Try Napa. I get my Valvoline gear oil through them and they always have enough in stock.

Like others I buy it by the 5 gallon bucket from NAPA, put a pump on it and run the Valvoline. I did modify my pump by buying some clear plastic tubing and making the hose longer so I can stay out from under my truck while I pump the fluid in. Buying 5 gallons at a time gives enough oil for about 3 changes and is a lot cheaper than buying by the quart bottle.
