Valvolene Premium Blue...

Are there a quite a few of you that use this oil? I just changed the oil in my 07 for the first time ( 1,000 miles after a few days of break in)... And I used the Valvolene premium blue 15/40. I noticed it is now rated CJ4 for the newer engines as well. There is a nice article on the front page of the TDR site that says we should stock pile all the CI4+ oil you can muster. Can't find any around here, so whats the hype??? Thanks!

Here is a long thread I started a while back about the CJ blend oil. Quite a few differing opinions. Basically, in the end.....if you change your oil regularly you should be fine. Valvoline PB is a great oil! Use it and don't look back. CJ or CI either one is fine.

I use Shell Rotella....but I had the same debate myself. My oil analysis from Blackstone says the CJ is doing great...but my Total Base Number (TBN) did go down some compared with the older blend. I am going to do another back to back test when I do my next oil change at the next 5k interval.

Thanks a lot, I did do a search and it brought up over 500 threads... LOLOL I change mine every 4-5,000 so figured I would be OK... The article on TDR site puts SHELL ROTELLA T Triple protection, DEAD LAST out of 20 oils tested! LOLOLOL I was using all along as well in my other trucks with no problems.. go figure!

Cummins says it's good for 10K, DC says its good for 7.5K, I change mine at 5K - digressing at the same interval as they do. But then I live in a hot climate, drive in mountains/up down changing elevations, and really work my truck hard. Oil is cheap as compared to the related issues of not being timely and changing it with long intervals. With the 3rd injector event we have a lot more soot/acids in our oil, that's enough for me to be motivated into a better changing routine.

The premium blue has the Cummins logo on the gallon jugs. That's a pretty good indicator for me, so that's what I use.

I agree, I live in a hot climate and also use the truck for towing as well. Not too many elevation changes but is my daily driver all week then Pulls my horse trailer to rodeos on the weekends!

i change mine at 5k with valovolie pb, but im fixing to make the switch to synthetics. why does out owners manual say we can go 15k on an oil change with light duty and 7.5k on severe duty when cd in mn stated cummins says 10k. there are to many discrepencies with DC and cummins!!

I go with 5K intervals. I'm more of a safe than sorry type though. Every engine that I've switched from conventional to sythetic springs oil leaks. Those that had factory sythetic fills never leaked. So, I'm staying with the conventional stuff on this truck. The OTR trucks don't use sythetic, for the most part, right? I figure if they can go 1MM miles on a motor then I can get to 500K on rotted plants and bones!

i used valvoline pb on my 06 and then switched to pb extreme at 9000 miles . if it has the cummins logo on the front of the bottle its good enough for me. i have seen no negatives from switching to synthetic at 9200 miles . truck runs and starts great and i do not use a drop. so its up to you but i think valvoline pb. oils are pretty good

06 QC 4X4 sb 5.9l auto. all stock dark blue.

FYI, There are a few truck company's that use synthetic oil in their new trucks and average 40,000 miles between oil changes. Also they use synthetic gear oil in the rear ends and they get a factor warranty for up to 750,000 miles IIRC. BTW, the motor oil info was passed on to me by my brother & sister inlaw who have driven OTR as a team for 15 years and then the last 4 years driving semis on road construction work in several states.

I have been thinking about going to synthetic but just haven't yet. The dealer changes mine about every 4-5000 miles due to mountains and towing. I've heard that once you start useing synthetic you can't go back, not that i would go back but is this true?

So, what I'm reading is that CI+4 and a high (>10) TBN are good for a CTD - what if the oil doesn't specifically say 'diesel' on the cover but it meets these requirements (and viscosity of course) and the company descriptions say it will work in diesels?

Nope, not true. You can go back and forth or even mix the two. It doesn't matter.
