Valve Adjustment

Had anyone had to have their valve timing adjusted or looked at with less that 15,000 miles on their truck? I have a constant ticking in mine, when warmed up, that isn’t there in any of the other Cummins that I’ve heard. So I took it to the Cummins dealer (Cummins Bridgeway) and had them listen to it. They said that there was definitely something not right and it was coming from the head, most likely the valves need to be readjusted or one could be sticking. They can't work on it until Dodge says they can, which sucks, but they said they would call the dealership where I purchased the truck and ask them for the go-ahead to tear into it. I hope Dodge lets them. Anyone else have this problem or something like it? It would be interesting to see what the cure was.

Hmmmm......

This is off the subject you inquired about but might be of some interest to you. A couple months ago I was in Michigan, pulling my 5er, and the water pump on my truck began leaking. I called Cummins Bridgeway in Dearborn and was told they could get me in and replace the water pump the following day.

I like and trust Cummins so did not ask for an estimate. Late in the morning, after I'd been waiting a couple hours, I was handed an estimate. $750 parts and labor!! $180 for the pump and five hours of labor at $85 to replace it. My response was probably considered impolite. To make a long story short I had a talk with the operations manager of the facility about consumer fraud. The truck was repaired within an hour and my bill was still high . . . $309 but it was $115 for the pump and two hours at $85 for labor. No charge for cores, core cleaning, coolant, gaskets, or shop fees.

In summary, I would not trust Cummins Bridgewater in Dearborn again.

Arrow Ticking

I have the ticking also. The first time I only had 5k miles on it, which got worse when I pulled my jeep to texas, then it was constant. The dealership replaced the timing gears and the cam shaft. the dealer says the manufacturer sent the gears to the assembly plant improperly pacaged and they bounced together. Anyhow, it has been 5k since the fix and the ticking is back again. It came back after I pulled a loaded trailer. Back it goes, strike 2....

Are you sure the "ticking" is not the injectors???

I have no idea what the ticking is. I'm just going off what Cummins told me when they looked at it.

Grandblanc,

Sounds like a bad injector. A stuck valve (or out of adjustment) will make her run rough, been there done that.
