valve adjustment

I want to adjust the valves on my truck. Have never done it on a ctd. I've been a mechanic for over 20 yrs. dont trust mechanics in shops. (past problems). I need valve lash measurements in. & ex. also tdc marks. thanks.

Re:valve adjustment

intake = .010
Exhaust = .020

TDC mark is on the VP44 gear. Twist the crank case breather off and use a mirrior.

Re:valve adjustment

How many miles? The severe service schedule says 135k for a 24V & 150k for normal service.....

Re:valve adjustment

There is a sequence that has to be followed... With the marks lined up you do the first cylinder (intake and exhaust) and then you follow a sequence. Then after that sequence is done you rotate the VP44 gear to all the way down and follow another sequence. Isn't this correct? I don't know the sequence though ???

Re:valve adjustment

I do it the stupid way and follow the fireing order, that is I find one with valves closed ,do that one and then next one and so on just depends as to which one you start with...yes i know there is the ez er way but i like checking ever one at t.d.c for good measure.

Re:valve adjustment

I can post the easy way if you really want it (written down in the garage). When I do mine I usually use a dial indicator to check the lash before I bother getting carried away with the feeler gauge. I did mine at 80,000 all were in spec. but they were all over the place, some lower end of the scale, some high end. They have such a large tolerance a blind man could get them in the ball bark. Between the matched injectors and the valve lash the engine is way smoother and quieter now.
