Valve Adjustment

Did the deed with 97,500 on the odo. Intakes were fine at .009", across the board, the exhausts, were a different story. Everyone of them was way too loose. At first I thought I used the .010" gauge it was so sloppy. Most needed almost 1/2 of a turn CW to close the gap to .020". Runs a lot quieter at normal idle, but the auto up to 1000 RPM shows a more pronounced lope than before, but without the clatter. That #6 is a real PITA to adjust. BTW, the cover had not been off before. 15mm deep socket on the crank damper was a lot easier than I thought it would be even with the SBS. You can use a 3/8 drive ratchet and she will turn over just fine.

You may want to mark the bottom of the damper with an "X" once you have TDC aligned on top. That way all you have to do is rotate the damper until you see the X again and you're all set to do the other valves.

If this is the first time you have touched the valves on your truck, that "looseness" you felt with the .020" feeler was normal....

in '06 the spec on the exh valve was changed to .026" to provide more seat dwell for heat transference from valve to head.

You're ok at .020" so don't worry, just thought you'd like to know your valves were ok where you found them.

Thanks for the post! On my 03 should I still go for .020 on the e-valves or shoot for .026?

I don't want to nit pick, but even if the spec was changed to .026, mine were not OK. You could hear them clatter under load. #6 was especially loud. Like I said, they took almost 1/2 turn to close the gap to .020". Assuming the rocker stud is 8 X 1.25, then each 1/2 turn would be .625mm or .0246". That means that the exhaust valve lash was roughly .044" so they were off by .024". I think I'll be checking them again in 10,000 miles.

Stay with the .020... in fact, you can take it down a little tighter and see just a tad better spool. (gives a little more duration)
