Hey board:

After posting my leaky engine problems here,....I have been able to confirm that the vacuum pump is indeed the culprit.

How many have used the double seal kit avail from http://www.fixinrams.com/id21.html ?? They make it sound like a supiorior alternative to replacing with a new standard seal. Has anyone found this to be true? How about ease of installation? Is this something relatively painless?

I'm considering ordering the kit from them, unless most think I'd be just as well off just replacing with the seal avail from cummins. (I mostly just dont want to have to tear this down and do it over again)

I have not used the seal from fixnrams.com BUT in the photo on their website the seal kit has Cummins written all over the package,I cant make out the part number on the package BUT it looks just like the package I just bought from Cummins for $8.17 to repair my leak,,,,, Original seal lasted 187000 miles hope to get that much from this one.

You can buy the Cummins kit, take the seal to a parts store, replace it with a double lip seal and still have less than $15 in the kit. The Cummins kit has complete instructions included.

I have used the kit and it was great. It came with everything that you needed. It even had tools to help get the old seal out and put the new one it. My seal wasn't sealing good for some reason so he took the price of the seal kit off a repaired pump. Great guy to work with.

So Farmer Dave you say the kit is great but the seal leaked???? was it human error?


My $8.16 seal Kit from Cummins worked great BUT did NOT come with tools OR a DVD to do the job,, Of Course by the time your done watching the DVD ,,,, I'm done with the job.

Its a great kit, I used it to replace mine about a month ago, no leaks anymore. He's really nice to talk to on the phone and told me if I had trouble installing it call him anytime. It was very easy process, I recomend getting the kit from fixenrams.com. Just take your time to clean everything up when you go to put it back in, makes life alot easier.

I am not sure what the problem was. I put the seal in and it leaked so we took it apart again and checked everything out to make sure everything was ok and put it back together and it still leaked. I don't know if it was something that I did or something else but I couldn't get it to stop leaking. When I talked to him he said that sometimes you get some that don't want to sell up. So he sent me out a pump that was resealed and it went in fine the first time.

The vp was fine as far as I could tell. I am not sure why the seal wasn't working.

I've installed alot of the seal kits at work (dodge ones) and the prob I see most often on high milers is the input shaft sealing surface of the power steering pump is grooved to the point where I pretty much have to recommend replacing the pump (gotta avoid the comeback). Does this "double seal" mentioned above seat different on the pump shaft so that the sealing surface is away from the worn spot?

Can't answer that JBody, but I used the Fixinrams Kit. He claims he had a double lipped seal designed for him?? If it's available elsewhere, that would probably save a few bucks, but I was happy with their kit and liked their video... not being a master mechanic!

I think that the seal sits in the same place but the double lips of the seal set on the shaft at different places. If you have any question give fixinrams a call and he will clear up any doubt you have.

I bought the Cummins kit last summer and replaced my seal....I think the final cost was $7.97 and the "tools" that come in the fixinrams kit look like pieces of pvc pipe in the pictures. I had sockets that fit the seals no problem.
Make sure everything is nice and clean when you re-assemble and you'll have no leaks either. The directions that come with the Cummins kit are more than adequate imo, especially once you get the pump out. You don't need a video.
Also, if you remove the PS pump from the Vac pump under the hood, you wont have to mess with the PS lines. I seem to remember that I removed the metal intercooler tube also for more room.

The double lip seal hits the shaft at a different place than the single lip ensuring a good seal...I will look for the part number and post it.

Yep, thats what it was designed for. It seals on both sides of the worn groove.

Thanks guys!! You don't even want to know how much that stupid pwr steering pump is. I'll look into the double seal for the next time. Anyone have a link to where this is sold or contact info?
