i have a question for all the virginianers. a couple of my buddies got new exhausts for their trucks and straight piped it, no cat no muffler. they also all got new inspections and passed. but what ive also been hearing is you have to have a cat on your exhaust in VA. i straight piped my 97 today and it rumbles like an 18 wheeler at 2 grand rpm's. but if anyone from va knows if you have to have a cat on your exhaust or not if you could tell me that would be great. thanks

Federal law says if it came with a cat it has to have it. States can't say you don't have to have one.

You might be better off discussing this with your buddies than on here.

mine is straight piped...passed inspection when other stuff didn't. i was sure i was screwed. i searched on here, and some people say all pre-98.5 (all 12 v, obviously) came with a cat, while others are quick to point out "my 97/96/95/etc never had one." the 2nd gen 24v's had no cat...sooo...maybe a loop hole??

MIne is 5" stright piped and I never had a problem passing inspection. Mine is titled as having a gross veght of 10001 lbs so it has to have truck tags in VA however it is emissions exempt!
