View Full Version : Used Oil Questions

I've read about folks who add their used oil to their fuel. A few questions here. (1) What sort of filtration system do you use (ie do you pour it through a "coffee filter" like material? Where do you get the filters?)? (2) How much oil per tank do you use? I generally fill up at the 1/4 mark, taking on about 25gallons. (3) Does the type of oil matter? I just drained my riding lawn mower (30wt); can I use that? 15/40? Synthetic? Does it matter? I have some old bottles (new oil) of 0/30 synthetic laying around the garage (they were on sale); can I use that? Appreciate any responses! ((SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL TEA PARTY))[coffee]

You will for sure get lots of answers for and against, The truck will burn what ever you dump in the tank, for how long without issues is the question. I believe there are factory reccomendations, something like 5% can be used (going from memeory here) Depending on the type of oil it could have all kinds of "dirt" in it from metal particles to acids. also there is the worry of incomplete compustion causing carbon build up issues,I personally feel its not worth the risk to a VP, now If I did not use my truck for my income, and I thought my VP was on the way out the door, I'd run what every "fuel" I could get for free, When you think about it , How far can you go on 1000$ of fuel? I think for me I can get 10-15 tankfuls, so if a VP lasts say 30 tankfuls , (and likely it would) you will have saved 2000$ and a VP is only 1000$ something to think about. funny thing is when you dont care or expect some thing to fail, it will always out last your expectations...who knows?

I ran a few gallons of used oil through my truck and had to immediately replace the fuel filter. I'd rather just stick with plain old diesel for the VP. But I agree with nickg on when he would use it, too....

There are a few very long threads about this , should do a search to find .
Each fuel system has different abilities to go through multiple fuel sources , the P7100 being able to use the largest variety of fuels , and the last couple of yrs. the least able to handle anything but ULSD .
Many say that the VP may need more lube than any other pump , so using WMO can be a good thing , the issue is the condition of the WMO that you put in , to start , to make easy , I would use only diesel engine oil [ not excluding compressor oil ect ] but to exclude gasser oil , manly because of gasser's can have a higher acid , which looking at PH of anything you put in your fuel , is something to keep on top of .
Then filtering , there are many filters that will get you to 5-2 micron , smaller is always better , I use a centrifuge [ 1/10 th micron ] .
Then the last thing is moisture , keep that out .
Check out this link , for some detail .
