Upgrading Smarty
Hey, quick question. Couldn't find my answer on the mads site.
Do you have to program the truck back to stock before upgrading the smarty software with a computer?

You don't have to... but I would.
When I did not, the programming on the Smarty, when I plugged it into my truck, Identified it as something different to what I downloaded.
Example: I would download 312D 309B Smt, when I would connect it to the truck it would say 313D 309C Smt.
I spoke with Bob about this, I had to download and re-download several times before I got the Smarty staightened out.
I would, and do, take it back to stock every time. What happens if you do not, and Smarty crashes on your computer, now your are vin locked(truck). It is a small precaution that takes little time.

I always take mine back to stock before loading new software on the Smarty. Like JJpage said 10 minutes is all it takes and if there is a problem with the Smarty upgrade you are not VIN locked.
There have been a couple of times that I did not go back to stock and yes it worked fine. But I have worked with computers and electronics for 40 years now and I try not to push my luck when not necessarily.

I always go back to stock. It only takes a few minutes so it is cheap insurance. I know Marco and Bob say it is fine to do with out going back to stock, but I know the karma gods will get back at me for a year of being a smartass if I don't go stock between updates. Like RamWheels.. I am in the computer business too and I know anything computerized is inherently evil and will try to embarrass you if you give it a chance.

Yesterday was the first time I change downloads with out going back to stock it worked but I will admit I was worried about something going wrong. I went from Revo back to 4.11 gonna see witch one I like better. I have always thought the 4.11 made my truck run better until I turned the RP up to 2 on the Revo tune and it sure made the throttle responce better.

I have gone from the 4.11, Betas 4.3, 4.4, 4.2, Revo, TNT, Revo and just the other day went back to Beta 4.4. I think the Revo and TNT make some additional power and run well but on my truck they seem to smoke more. I can control the smoke but just need to be careful. The Beta 4.4 for what ever reason works very well with my truck. Runs smooth and strong and the smoke seems to be more controllable. I am going to run the 4.4 for a few tanks and see how it goes. I had been running the Beta 4.4 for some time before Revo came out and still think it is the best one for my truck...

This is a good post and good advice. Flashing anything, your PC, your cell phone, your truck, is always risky.
Proceed carefully & also try to only reflash in your driveway in case anything does go wrong.
