If you like to race, you'll need an automatic. Some of the 98.5 to 01 trucks are 53 blocks, which are prone to cracking. Other than that, its pretty much up to you. Twin turbos are where its at for keeping EGT's down while towing, and having fast spoolup. They are about as good as it gets for the street if you can swing them.

Just find one without the 53 block. Doesent really matter what year, but an 02, shouldnt have a 53 block, so that would be the best way not to get one. I dont like the VP44 pumps myself, so for that reason, im not a big fan of the 24 valves unless they are p-pump'd.

budget build or are you gonna throw money at it?
twins, 150-180 injectors, Smarty (for timing) and TST PM3 or Blue Chip FMS (for fueling). of course you need a built trans, FASS or Airdog fuel system, high flow air filter and good free flow exhaust to start! maybe some traction bars.

A 12 valve can be calmed down with a valet switch.

Learn to use your right foot, and turning it up and down isn't a concern.

A TST Comp PM3 stacked with a used EZ. Mach 4 injectors, A HTT 62/71/13SS over an S400, An Airdog for the fuel issues, And a fully built tranny with a billet input and billet output shaft. That will give you 12.6 to 12.8 in the 1/4 and be a good tow rig as well. My truck actually runs cooler with the TST on level 3 than turning it off when towing. The boost comes up quicker and stays up while towing on this setting. Mach 6 injectors might work but you would have to watch your EGT's more closely where 4's with twins wouldn't be an issue. Base who builds your tranny on who your closest installer is. The service factor is important. Fill out your signature so we know where you are from and someone will recommend a good builder for the tranny. I would also recommend o-ringing the head and using studs. My truck has ran a best pass of 12.84 on fuel only on bigger tires with the same setup except a big single instead of twins. I haven't ran it on the 265 tires yet. By the way, I have a 53 block with over 250,000 miles on it with no cracks and it uses no oil. They aren't all bad. I like my 99 because I don't have to deal with torque management and I don't have a top speed limiter although I'm not one to push that anyway. I have the rear brake cylinder mod done to mine and it stops way better than the disc brake equipped 02 trucks will but they have better calipers on the front of the 02's.
