Uh Oh - 48RE Problem!

Sorry to alarm but wanted to get this out to everyone..

Symptom - under hard acceleration, and after the shift from first to second my transmissions appears to slip (loss of acceleration, high revs) when I back off the throttle it re-engages. Problem can not be repeated with any degree of predictability. Can happen with a load or without a load. Date of manufacture was 1/03.

Diagnosis- took it to the dealer today and... "there is definitely a problem and we are still investigating the cause..."

I'll keep y'all posted. I hope its just a simple program/chip issue but the "...still investigating" part has me a little bummed [undecided] > :-[ :'(

Re:Uh Oh - 48RE Problem!

Sorry to hear about your tranny on such a new vehicle dockhigh. I remember you posting recently that you drove it from New York to Dallas "brand new out of the box". I doubt this would cause your tranny issue, but did you follow the manual's break in procedures?

Good luck, hope they resolve your issue soon.

Re:Uh Oh - 48RE Problem!

I followed everything to the letter. Put about 900 miles on her without a load, varying speed, the whole bit. Then towed a 7000 # trailer about 1500 miles. Took it easy the first day then just drove a comfortable speed the rest of the way. Tranny is fine otherwise, just this slip when on it hard and even then its hard to make it happen unless rate of acceleration is just right. Anyway, its diappointing because I have heard nothing but good things about the new transmission thus far. I'm now driving my old 98 1500 w/360 -what a HUGE difference going back to the old beast.

Thanks for your post, hopefully I'll be back with some good news or further details tomorrow.

Re:Uh Oh - 48RE Problem!

Crazy question, but I see you have BFG 315/70R17's on the truck...were those factory? If not, when did you install them? Do you think perhaps the bigger tires could have something to do with the possible premature failure of the tranny?

I'm no mechanic and am simply asking the question as those tires sound big, and I wonder if they put more wear and tear on the tranny than stock tires. But like I said, I'm no mechanic and am only asking the questions to learn. Thanks.

Re:Uh Oh - 48RE Problem!

how many miles on the truck now ? & is isolated to the 1st to 2nd shift only . dont know much about the new 48re but in other makes i have replaced alot of shift silinoids that have prevented proper shifting . alot of the newer stuff will have one silinoid per gear . & its not a major repair . keep us posted thanks

Re:Uh Oh - 48RE Problem!

2700 miles so far. A lot of people on this board are running with larger tires and its the reason I wanted the 4.10 final gear ratio - it has a similar effect as if I was running 3.73's with stock tires. At 2000 rpm the 3.73's will run at 73mph with stock 265 tires - the 4.10's will run at 72mph with 315's. I am assuming the the effect is almost the same on the transmission with either set up.

Re:Uh Oh - 48RE Problem!

I am not picking on anyone when I ask this question, so don't get too mad at me. Why order a truck with tall gears and then put larger tires on it to bring the ratio down? If you did it for looks, thats fine because that is what I did on my previous Chevy/D-max. I have the off/road tires from the factory on my truck and I have the 3.73 gears and all is well. I know that on my Chevy the shift points changed quite a bit with the Allison tranny that I had when I went to a 33" tire, and I should have had this reprogrammed...but I did not.

Re:Uh Oh - 48RE Problem!

That's exactly why angle. I feel the truck looks too big for the stock tires so my intention all along was to do this and not suffer with excessive shifting out of OD when towing with 3.73 gears and large tires. I appreciate the question, just a personal preference.

Here she is with her big paws...

Re:Uh Oh - 48RE Problem!

I know where you are coming from, as the 02' Chevy 2500 CC 4X4 looked really bad with the stock tires that GM offered. I went to Dayton 33" baja tires, and that really filled them wheel wells nicely (they fit the stock rims as they were only 10" wide). The off-road tires that I have now from the factory do not look too bad (BF Goodrich). That is a nice looking truck, as the charcoal was my second choice in colors over white (for which I have now)

Re:Uh Oh - 48RE Problem!

Picked up the truck yesterday. Dealer said they adjusted the throttle linkage and added tranny oil. I knew it was BS the moment I heard it. I must have checked the tranny oil 5 times before bringing it in. Sure enough, same thing still happening. Dealer said there were no error codes so I guess if the computer doesn't tell them what to do, they start doing anything that comes to mind.. must check and see if tranny oil is high now..

More later...

Dockhigh:

From everything I have read, your "bigger paws" would have nothing to do with your tranny problem. I really hope that the dealer stops guessing and finds the root of the problem!

DeWain

Re:Uh Oh - 48RE Problem!

Dockhigh. I drove mine to the east coast and back pulling my 5th wheel. The truck only had 2000 mi on it when I left. Drove it around 3000 mi on the trip. No problems with the tranny.

Just a thought though...the 48re torque converter is supposed to lock up in 3rd and 4th gear. I wonder if yours is not locking????
