U gotta love em

I got to the hunt club Wed. and the check engine light came on for the third time in a week. Battery voltage was down and lights were dim. I parked the truck and went on the morning hunts. Got back in the truck at noon and the altenator refused to charge. I massaged the altenator with a stiff rap of an adjustable spanner and it started charging. It continued charging all the way home. I pulled the altenator apart and just as I hoped, the brushes were worn out. However, I could not find a set of brushes anywhere. I had to replace the whole altenator.

The good news is it was a very easy repair. That has been the case on most things I have done on this truck. I think would rather push a first gen than ride in any thing else. Except maybe a KW.

Big red letters that light up on the dash that mean UH OH! You aren't watching your gauges very well.

I get so complacent driving this truck I forget that things can go bad at times. I periodically check under the hood and I keep a close tab on tire pressure but once I get moving it just keeps going like the EverReady Bunny.
Even at nine volts on the gauge the shutdown solenoid stayed open. I have had mishaps with this truck that would kill a lesser vehicle and came out without a scratch. U gotta love em.

Im pretty sure geno's has the alternator brushes. I know its not easy to wait for days to have them delivered. When I worked at a parts store years ago a few people would rebuild there own stuff. We sold some brushes and some starter bushings, drives. It seems harder to find those parts now.

i pulled mine apart to do the same, only to reveal the copper segements were worn 3/32" deep, exchanged for autozone life'er, warranty will give replacement anywhere it might permaturely fail, and yes the brushes are availabe, your local auto parts store's rebuilder will furnish them

My truck doesn't have the check engine light. In its place I have the gate open light. How sad.

Advance auto still sells the brush kits to rebuild the GM alternators, Stock and aftermarket..... I just bought a kit actually to up my wattage to 240 amp ....hopefully my little small block will turn the big bad alternator to power my 2 big bad amps behind my seat

its off topic but you could get a capasitor brandon to keep a constant supply of juice to your amps. it will keep your subs happy and make them hit harder if you have them set up right...and just currious why would you have 2 amps?

2 amps,

My 4 frontish speakers are hooked to an amp and my 2 rear speakers hooked to the same amp the 2 12's are hooked to.

hahaha alot of system in a regular cab....

I've never heard anything good about a crapacitor...the audio nerds on my chevy forum said they're a joke because you're already running power straight off the battery

It must be a local thing here but, I called all the different part stores in my area within 25 miles. Auto Zone was the only place that had any listed and the supplier was out and no longer available. Pep Boys was the cheapest and it has a lifetime limited warrenty. I thought about up grading to a higher output but decided 120 amps was enough for my stock radio. I won't be putting in any high powered amps. My hearing is bad enough as it is and I won't give up the gun rack behind the seat.
